View Full Version : Getting into the 'real' game

From what I have read on bulletin boards and from the manual, it sounds like at the higher levels it turns into some kind of war between realms. How does this work? Do you hit a certain level and get invited to participate in raids or is it not an organized thing? I was playing Albion on Pellinor but I read that it sounds like Albion has already won all the relics, in which case it would seem pointless to build up a character there if the epic-style conquests are over.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, do hibernia on pellinor, thats where we all play, albs have about double the people us and the midgards have....and we can steal back the relics so its not like they have won completely, its basically fighting back and forth

hmmm ok. well, what kind of characters are in need for high level RvR? I've read that fighters are relatively useless in the late game. I was thinking of an elf eldritch... but Ive always been one to run into the thick of combat, not very standoffish. If that doesnt work well in DAoC, then I'll adjust but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah, definitely come to Hibernia Pellinor if you want to hang with any of us. I'm an Eldtrich, so I can give you a little input there. I really enjoy the character and I think I have value in RvR, as long as I'm in a group that can protect me somewhat. I deal nasty damage and have both ranged attacks that are valuable for offense and AE attacks that are valuable for keep defense. If someone attacks me though, I'm toast.

If I were going to roll a character right now with an emphasis on RvR, I would either roll a crazy stealth ranger or an awesome support character like a bard. I think it would be pretty cool to roam the frontier solo in stealth mode and then be able to snipe Albs from afar. Also would be cool to be a really valuable support person who didn't have to worry so much about the fighting, but just taking care of the troops. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Omg! What are you doing in Albion!?!? Get over to Hibernia. Send me a tell (Boomy, Boomie, or Booom, I'm all three), and I will invite you to our guild. I can armorcraft, so you get free clothes and stuff.

Play whatever is most fun for you. Tanks are not useless in RvR. Malk is a Hero (Hib tank dude) and he is just awesome in RvR. He has the most realm points (when you kill in RvR you get realm points) of any of us, and is one of the top realm point guys in all of Hibernia. Rangers get lots of Realm points too. Just stay invisible in the trees and pick off bad guys one by one. But there are sooooooooooooo many new rangers in Hibernia these days (all named llegolas or lehgolas or leggolas, etc etc). You can be a magicy guy that blows bad guys up, but if you don't like dying from one hit, that may not be for you. Bards and Druids and Rangers don't get as much glory as the fighters, but they are soooo important. Without them we are dead meat in RvR. They buff up the fighter so they can hit harder and survive longer, they heal the wounded and rez the dead, they do crowd control things and other stuff. You still get realm points even if you do nothing but heal, because anyone who kills a smell alb automatically splits the realm points with people in his group. Once the Bards, Wardens, and Druids are dead, the battle is over. Because both sides keep killing each other, but our guys will stay down because all our rezzers are dead, while the albs can keep rezing their dead. If we have alot of rezzers in a battle, we can just keep bringin the fighters back to life and healing them, hopefully faster than the enemy, so our force stays strong while theirs gets weaker and weaker.

Anyway, you said you liked to melee fight, and the best melee fighter of the three rezzer/healers is the Warden. The Bard can't wear the best armor and the Druid doesn't get fighting styles. If you want to be a pure fighter, there are three kinds. The Hero is the toughest, no magic at all. The Champ can wear the same armor and gets the same fighting styles as the Hero, but isnt quite as tough, can't use the biggest shield and huge spear thingy, but gets some cool magic. The Blademaster doesn't wear the best armor like the other two, but uses two weapons at once and can do some neat stuff with them.

If you play an Alb on Pellinore, everyone in this chat room will plug their nose at your smelly posts and kill you on site in the game ;p

Play a Hib. Champs are a fighter/mage cross. Wardens are kind of a fighter/healer cross.

we have a lot of rangers coming up in the guild too.. bards we have few of, though i've got a new one. If i'm not mistaken we have only one mentalist, but i dunno how good they are

Actually we have three Mentalists. Myself, Stickybuns and Istrarion (Harm). Mentalists are pretty cool in that they can do a lot of different things. I can blast (though not as hard as an Eldritch); I can heal (though not as well as a bard or druid); I can mez (though not as well as a bard and I don't get AoE mez); I can charm animals to use as pets (though it's not as good as a druid or enchanter pet since I have to spend mana to keep it charmed and it constantly tries to resist me so sometimes I lose control of it and it attakcs me). We do get some unique stuff though. Most importantly, a mana regen buff (aka crack). Everybody loves crack. We also get an AoE DoT which I hear is great for RvR (I don't have it yet), and a health regen buff which is really cool for downtime between fights, especially if you're the only healer in a group.

All in all, the Mentalist is a really versatile class. Although we don't really excel in any one thing, we have the ability to switch roles to fit just about any situation. I have tons of fun playing my Mentalist, both in RvR and in PvE.
