View Full Version : movie watching
All the discussion about watching a cowboy movie made me ponder... what is the fascination with movies? I am admittedly not a TV or movie watcher. I hear about a movie coming out, and I'm usually not drawn to it. I don't go to Blockbuster. I don't even go to libraries to borrow movies (unless I want to get some for my kids).
I do have a very busy life, and I enjoy being busy. Do people watch movies to fill in the blanks of their lives? Does it enhance their lives? Does it satisfy some curiousity?
Do I watch ANY movies? I bought a DVD player about a year ago, and spent some money during the past year buying DVDs I like. But just because I own them doesn't mean I watch them all the time. They just sit there waiting for my attention.

well movies for me are extremely entertaining and provoke many feelings (well the good ones at least) and also they can help provide some good humor...love seeing good comedies...anyways, i enjoy watching movies and i dont think it has anything to do with "blanks in life" or "enhancing life"...a good story in a movie is just that, and it is very entertaining to watch a good movie and become wrapped up in it for however long the movie is. id pose the same question as to why people like to play video games, since it is a similar effect of taking you away from reality.

Why do people go to museums or sporting events? Why do they play musical instruments or read books or listen to music or go camping or do anything that isn't directly related to their survival? Movies are no different from any other distraction. People just enjoy doing different things, that's all.
For example, I personally can't understand why anyone in their right mind would enjoy cycling. I mean, if I want exercise, I'll go to the gym. If I want to enjoy the outdoors, I'll go to the park and have a nice walk. I would never get on a bike and start peddling. I mean, what if you get too far from home and you're too tired to get back? What about having to deal with all the traffic? And those seats can't be comfortable. I get sooo annoyed at having to drive 10 miles per hour behind a cyclist until I can pass. I would never want to be one of those annoying little twits in their funny little pants. But, I guess some people like it, so ... more power to them.
I suppose... but if you aren't interested in a topic until a movie comes out, it really seems odd. Marketing sucks people in? You go to a movie because a certain actor or actress is in it. You go to a movie because it is a comedy rather than a drama. You go to a movie because it is about cowboys and has something to do with gay love. I would think 1) you'd be interested in gay love already and 2) you'd be watching lots of cowboy movies not just this one.
I appreciate your answers because you probably think I'm really weird for asking my question. It's somewhat an economics question because I think of movies as a waste of money. However, I don't gamble either. And I suppose going to movies can be a gamble. You don't know if you'll get your money's worth.

I may not be interested in the subject of "baby suckling at mother's breast," but I can certainly go to a museum and appreciate the beauty of a painting depicting this. The same is true for movies. I don't go to see a movie because I'm interested in the subject matter. I go to see a movie expecting to go on a ride. That ride may be a fun, superficial one that makes me laugh, or it may be a ride that deeply explores human behavior and emotion ... one I can actually grow from. And the latter truly is a work of art for me.
I know lots of people that don't care for movies much. But, again, I know lots of people that don't care for golf or boxing or any number of things that other people enjoy. People are just different. They don't experience things in the same way. So, what may be very moving or pleasurable for you may do nothing for me, and vice versa.

It's a form of entertainment and I enjoy it. I also enjoy going with my daughter and watching her enjoy the stories told.
It's quite simple. It's a form of entertainment. What do you do for entertainment Sayj?

i agree with alli here...its all personal preference and view of the world. for example... i think keeping busy doing a job 80 hours a week is a waste of my time, or is something that simply is there to distract me from what is real and important in life...but again this is would be something that is my perception and not others.
i also dont agree that you see a movie because this actor or actress is in it or that its for the "gamble", however i do agree that the marketing does drag you in somewhat but simply dictates which movies you are going to see.
in the 30s movie going was quite the popular thing where "going out" was going to the movies and having this great experience. i dont know what that is the equivalent to now...clubs? movies still? it all costs money and as far as a gamble? i dont think so...i dont really even think about money when i go to the movies...never say this was a waste of money, etc...im there for the experience and enjoyment of the film as well as the interaction with the people i go with

I knew SOMEONE would figure it out. Had to be you, Elv.
If you really get down to it...movies are somewhat of an art form. They use different camera angles and shots to invoke different feelings in the viewer. So it's not that different from going to a museum or whatnot...because even at a museum or art show you're not sure if what you're going to see will suck or not. Same with a movie. The last movie I saw in theatres was Narnia...and that's because I read the books a long time ago and wanted to see how close they got to the books. Like Mo...I only really go to movies with my daughter or I go to movies every once in while that I know I might enjoy. And most of the time it's going to a movie with a person/persons that you enjoy spending time with. Likewise with art...I go to museums I like the art in or I go to shows that interest me. For me...it's entertainment...not fill-in-the-blanks-of-life. Now for my sister in bro-in-law....lol dunno 'bout them they've seen every movie out there...even the sucky ones!

I wait till I am just about to pass the Twit, and they are a TWIT, then blow the horn, make em crap in their funny little pants, give them the one finger salute accompanied with the :cheese:
When I ride a bike, its on a trail or a sidewalk (always giving way to pedestrians) and would never ride on the road. With these drivers nowadays, I would be too scared shitless to ride on the road.

I still get a rush when the lights dim in a theatre and the movie starts.
I don't know why I love movies, I just do. I suspect it's for the same reason I love to read. A great movie can transport me to another world. That's probably why I don't usually like horror movies much. I don't want to be in THAT world. Though, I'm not sure that's it either because I loved, "Alien(s)" and I sure didn't want to be THERE.
I would love though, to see Middle-earth, or 19th century Cornwall, or Carribbean pirates, or to meet Atticus Finch.
Movies entertain me, enrich my life, and sometimes, stretch my mind.
And I like those things!

Figgy's answer could totally have been mine.
I saw Nanny McPhee yesterday, for my daughter's 8th birthday. It was fantastic.

Movies are about the only place you can go these days to watch people getting killed in a variety of different ways and not go to jail or get shot at.
On that note, I saw the new Underworld movie tonight and the last bad guy to die at the end is definitely a candidate for one of the better movie kills of all time... (Trying not to spoil it with too much info for those that haven't seen it!)
