View Full Version : How hard is the treadmill in WoW?

I'm meaning for a casual gamer who would play 3-4 hours a sitting 3-5 nights a week. How long would you estimate it would take to make it to lvl 60?

I would say that the /played time to get to 60 is around 18-22 days give or take depending on your focus and play style, so figure from there.


depending on what your doing XP flows very quickly, and at a fairly similar rate throughout all of the levels. It took me about as long to get from 50-59 1/2 as it took me to get from 20-30...

Quests are probably the major source of XP and doing several quests your level can easily gain you 1/2 to 3/4ths of a level, and alot of the quests are very easy to run through solo, especially in the first 20 levels. Basically a quest give you a bit of story, a task (standard fair- deliver, kill, gather, etc...) which you head out and do, most of which involve killing a bunch of things, which gets a decent amount of XP, and then you turn in the Quest, which gives you a huge chunk of XP, cash and and item. Alot of quests are chains, that can take several levels to complete.

Some are annoying because of low quest item drop rates, or alot of travel, and some require that you have a group to do, but they are all fairly interesting and will always keep you moving around the world.
One of the better features of the quests is that once youve almost out leveled an area your almost guaranteed to be given a quest that will take you to one or more new areas that are more level appropriate.

On top of that for every 8 hours you spend in an INN (or in any major city) you get a block of rest XP, which means that every mob you wack while "rested" gives you double the normal XP amount. Take 2-3 days off and you have nearly a whole level of rest XP.

There is very little camping. Any camping that you will do will usually be the result of a quest, or to finish of the last of a level. At worst youll spend like several hours killing the same mob for some quest item that your not getting lucky with and then youll move on.

I would have to say that the treadmill is very enjoyable, especially if you take the time to pay attention to all the various stories that run through the quest lines...

I have only one complaint, as a casual gamer that only reached level 42 I became annoyed that I could no longer complete quests by myself in areas that were my level due to the fact that I was always running in to squads of Alliance. I would just get killed constantly and doing a kill quest that required me to kill 30 mobs would take almost an entire week to complete because of all the dying I did due to Alliance attacks. It got to the point that for levels 40-42 I gained at least 80% of my experience from grinding through croc's in that one swamp zone. It got kind of boring.

However as long as you have someone around your level to party up with you'll be fine.

oh yea, i did forget to mention the pvp factor... its a good idea once your past level 20 or so to try to find someone, or a couple someones that has similar quests and do them together... the quests are easier, and having a couple people will deter at least some ganking...

I'm lvl 42 now and it I still manage to do quests alone quite often. But Harm is right - if you try to do them prime-time you'll be screwed most of the time. I've found that I do the solo quests in the mornings on the weekends or other "off-times." Then you run into very few Albs and those you do are often solo themselves and like the "pale green pants with nobody inside them" are just as afraid of you as you are of them. If I /wave or /dance at them - we usually end up leaving each other alone.


Why a pvp server anyway? I would vote NO on that next time. then you pvp'ers can still fight all the time by having your flags on - but the rest of us could mind our business and just have fun.

18-22 days if you screw around a lot ;)

also when you get higher you can spend more time in instances for xp too

yeah, 1 month of casual playing should bring you up to level 50 ^^

nah, it's pretty easy.
do all the solo quests and then grab some guildies to get you through all the elite quests.

That's why we're on an RP server (A, for the atmosphere; B, Canidae doesn't like PvP).

We should point out though, that it is a totally different kind of treadmill than daoc. In daoc, we would find a spawn of monsters that is good for our level, (parth farm, then mites, then TS, then CM, then fins) and just stand on that spawn for literally days (or weeks) at a time pulling the same mob over and over again. For some sick reason I found this to be fun, but I must admit it was the ultimate treadmill. That's why I liked Trials of Atlantis so much. Once I got to 40 I could work on master levels and try to find artifacts and get experience while doing those fun adventures, instead of just sitting at a spawn site.

There is no fin tree in WoW, there is no parth farm or mite log. 99% of my experience is gained while questing. Once in a blue moon, I will be doing a quest and think to myself, "hey, these mobs are pretty good exp, I think I will chill here and farm them a bit," and get some extra experience that way. But mostly I just do quests, the quests rewards give a nice chunk of exp, and I generally have to kill a bunch of monsters to get the quest items and stuff so I get a lot of exp that way.

It's still technically a treadmill, but its a much more fun treadmill.

Daoc treadmill was like, 1. Ask if everyone ready for pull. 2. Pull mobs. 3. Use the first button on your quickybar, then use the second button on your quickybar. 4. Loot. 5. Med.

WoW treadmill is like, 1. Find new area (cuz quest sent you there). 2. Get a ton of quests from npcs in new area. 3. Go exploring to do one of the quests. 4. Get reward. 5. Choose another quest. 6. Rinse and repeat. 7. Start in another new area.

Bleh, the only thing that is different in a RP server from a normal server is on the RP server you got a ton of people bitching that people aren't roleplaying. :laugh:

I am mostly kidding but when I did log on to Shadow Council last week during the patches that is all I heard from people in the NE noob zone.

I actually joined (ever so briefly) into a PvP server vs RP server debate last night on Shadow Council.

To sum up my input, it was something like, "The main difference is the opinions expressed by the self-righteous assholes who firmly believe that their selection of server type is a lifestyle decision."

My point is simply that the players on all servers are very much the same ultimately, except for the vocal minority of valuless elitism.

Don't get me wrong, left to my own devices I will choose an RP server over a "Normal" server and a "Normal" server over a "PvP" server. I have nothing against PvP.

Why? Generally a slightly higher percentage of people who are "playing a role while playing the game" instead of just "playing the game". That and if I woke up one morning and discovered I was a self-righteous asshole (I know! You are thinking, "he just now noticed??") who firmly believes that my selection of server type is a lifestyle decision, I would probably be one of the RP guys who says, "PvP on a PvP server is senseless slaugher, when we commit senseless slaughter on an RP server it has MEANING."
