Over the recent weeks we have been investigating the activities of certain individuals who have been farming gold in order to sell it in exchange for real world currency. After researching the situation, we have issued permanent suspensions to over one thousand accounts that have been engaging in this practice. We do not condone such actions and will take decisive action as they are against our policy and damage the game economy as a whole. We will continue researching this matter. If you suspect someone of taking part in said gold farming, please eMail the report to wowgm@blizzard.com.

I'm really not sure why this a problem. Who cares is somebody wants to fork out real money for vitual cash? There appear to be some people who have more money than time and wish to pay for gold instead of farm it. Is that really any different than a higher level guildmate sending you items you can farm yourself? Or tossing you some gold if your broke? I see plenty of people on mounts at level 40. After my experience, it's hard to imagine someone having the gold to buy one without some kind of help.

Hep said it best Hammer. In DAoC it's not a big deal because it doesn't effect the "end game", meaning that even if you had all the gold and all the items you could possibly ask for then what? You go rvr. In WoW, what do you do?

Being able to purchase gold messes up the in game economy pretty bad. We had that happen in EQ and the price of mid-range and high end items sky rocketed because there was sudden influx of cash for those willing to pay $ for it.

couldn't have put it better myself
some of us can't afford to buy a bit of gold to get that uber weapon. by eliminating that option, it means all players get the same chance, after all, we all pay the same for the game itself, so we should all be able to get the same out of it.

... I see plenty of people on mounts at level 40. After my experience, it's hard to imagine someone having the gold to buy one without some kind of help. ...
I had about 140 gold in Retail at lvl 40 and I'm up to around 100 again at 44 but I had months of beta experience. If you want money you simply need to know how to go about earning it. I can earn a lot in no time at the AH by simply buying stuff that's being sold too cheap and reselling it in some form and that's just one of many ways to earn your gold.
My point being, not everyone who has a decent amount of cash is necessarily a gold farmer, a gold purchaser, has some sugah-daddy etc.
I bet if you'd start fresh on a new server that you'd easily have enough gold for a mount at 40.
Those gold farmers are seriously annoying though and I hope Blizzards bans all of 'em. If not then you can at least farm'em for honor points I guess...

I still don't see it being very different from a level 60 with tons of gold showering some on a lower guildie. The one thing I do think would be a pain is that the farmers more than likely know the best spots and keep them camped thus screwing over a more casual player.
