that asus board is supposed to be rock solid board. I was thinking about getting that but read it has an overclocking "block" on it. It won't allow you to overclock over a certain point, so I went with the msi board.
yum corsair ram. wish i could have gotten that but it cost a pretty penny.
*sniff* i'm jealous. you got the raptor hd's. those things are expensive as hell. I might save some money and add those to the system i'm getting.
overall though...looks like a great system.

Wrong. The new Rev2 of The Asus A8V Deluxe has Working AGP/PCI Locks, which means you can overclock to your hearts content.
I have been running an A8V Deluxe Rev2 with an Athlon64 3500+ for well over 6 months now and it runs rock solid at 2.5Ghz (Stock is 2.2).

No point in going with the faster Corsair stuff - Athlon 64's don't really give a rats ass about it. There's literally less than 1% performance difference - if at all.
Pentium4's on the other hand - big bonuses.
btw, that's the same RAM I had in my P4, that my wife now has in her XP2800+ (I upgraded to PC3700 2.5-8-3-3 OCZ (runs at 2-6-3-3) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-843&depa=0

Doobius wasn't trying to be a 'Buthead' frick he was just trying to explain/correct BR(He wasn't tryin to offend ya BR, honest) And just explained that he had his OCed up to....
He wrote that post right beside me and I didn't think he was being a dink about it, just letting others know that OCing is doable on that board. If anyone else was interested in buying it. Thats all.

The point is that the Corsair will do 2-2-2-5 at PC3200, but will also OC up to around DDR500 speeds with a little looser timings. The Value PC3200 RAM wont, so there is a point.

man that ram is expensive, but sounds great too.
I went with the budget ram, it's supposed to be pretty good for it's price range. i didn't even break the 200 mark with the pair i got.

Everything got shipped today but the case! Out of stock:( gonna take a few more days for that to come in:( NCIX is pretty cool about shipping whats in and not waiting for the last item to make money or save money shipping. So everything else should arrive tue-wed and hopefully the case is in by end of next week.

I think it's incredibly rude when computer savvy people are rude to those who aren't - treating them like kids.
A little tact goes a long way.

I don't see it as rude -- tho I can see how the "Wrong." at the beginning could give that impression.

Since I am not an overclocker, would budget rams be fine for Athlon 64 3500?

Looks like I'm hoping to go the same way as those above -- spending tax refund money on a new system. Up until now I have been buying Dell systems but am thinking of going out on a limb and trying one of the approaches above?
Any advice for the none-to-savvy computer builder?

Put my system together last week. Everything is running smoothly. case looks awesome, and it runs super fast. it's like night and day compared to my old computer. I think it loaded windows in like 10 minutes after the initial formatting and partitioning of the drives. I was jizzing my pants.
i did have some trouble setting up the raid because of stupid drivers and such but got that working.
the zalman heatsink and fan i got, keeps the cpu temps at 40C idle and ~50 under load.
I put an NV silencer5 on the video card and it keeps the vid card at ~56C idle and ~67 something under load.
I haven't even started overclocking the thing yet. not sure if i really need to...hehe.
the system runs so quiet and smooth that i hardly notice it's on.
I get 0 lag when playing WoW, even in IF. I max out at 60 fps in IF even around the AH.
I'll try to post some pics later on.
Rooster

Not sure I would have modified a $400 video card - voiding the warranty.
bloodreign
03-06-2005, 11:14 PM
i saved all the parts so if it breaks down, i'll just put the original parts back on it and rma it. haha.
the original heatsink and fan on the video card sucked...like really sucked
Rooster

I heard the eVGA stock fan/heatsink sucked.
They'd prolly pull it off and go.. hey.. that's not our goop.
bloodreign
03-07-2005, 01:20 AM
prolly, but I'll take the risk for better cooling. I'm hoping the better cooling will extend the life of my vid card. I don't plan on buying another 400 dollar card any time soon.
it's prolly the most expensive thing on my system.
feril

Thats cool your system is rockin bud:) I've got no complaints bout mine either. WoW is so much more playable with a juiced up comp. I shoulda upgraded when the game came out:) better late than never i guess:)
