From what I understand Blizzard is saying this app is a trojan horse...

From what I understand Blizzard is saying this app is a trojan horse...

Don't bother with tocs..Click on Addon button on character selection screen and uncheck the check version box.

Hmm, what does it really do if it is a trojan?

I applied it and it seemed to have worked for me. Did I just get Owned by Chinese?

If it is a trojan it can do a number of things... The most common though is giving admin access to a remote user.

I am not 100% sure it is a trojan... I am just repeating what I heard from a co-worker who said he read a blizzard post saying it was.

Quickest way to look is check your startup section of your registry along with the msconfig startup file (win98. winXP). If that does not show anything out of the norm you are fine.

Looks like the trojan is from a file called "cosmosfix.exe" and the trojan is a known one, so if you've got an AV installed, you should be ok.

And this thread the Cosmos Team Lead advises you NOT to change the TOC number.

yeah changing ToC number is not a good idea cause it defeats the whole purpose of the thing

Wait, is that the same thing that Feril posted in the other thread? Cuz I already downloaded it and used it. Is someone stealing all my passwords and stuff? Ugggh, I hate bad people!!!

Now I gotta read that thread NL posted to see what blizzard is saying, and I gotta run norton AV, which will probably take 5 hours and make WoW superlaggy for me and stuff.

Omg, the thread about the virus is 10 pages. My attention span is 2 pages max. This sucks.

You should be fine. Change your password and run a virus scanner if you're skittish.

The Trojan is the file cosmosfix.exe. Looks like the WoWToC.exe BR linked from curse-gaming is ok.

Eyonix from Blizzard reported that a link to customized user-interface utility links to anix's post in his own words:

I wanted to take a moment and alert you to a Trojan virus link that has been posted on a number of our forums this evening. This file appears to be a fix for a customized user-interface utility and players are advised to not open this executable under any circumstances, but instead report the offending thread using the Bio-Hazard symbol appearing on the right hand side of the post.

Please also be aware that posting viruses or any other harmful program will lead to immediate and permanent removal from our forums, as well as possible disciplinary actions against one's account. Thank you for understanding our position concerning this matter.

In a second post, Eyonix added that:

The file name was "cosmosfix.exe". Please keep in mind that it is ill advised to download any executable file being distributed on our forums, or from any otherwise unknown person or address. Please navigate the internet, keeping safety in mind.

Yeah, my normal cleanup includes a look at msconfig and that's cool after running that.

Yes using the toc modifier apps are a bad idea, you wont know which addons are out of date and which arnt, and several of those apps and not completely on the up and up.

I always use this to change my .toc files. It's easy to use.

let the mod authors update the .toc files when their mods are actually compliant -- and in the meantime use the 'disable version checking' feature of the game.
