Taking longer breaks from EQ now that my character is finally approaching level 50......and I really wanted to try DAoC to see what it was like, so I loaded it up on my sister's comp tonight and jumped in.

Well, I played for a couple hours, killed stuff, and generally messed around, and after what I saw.......

I'm definitely coming back for more. This game is too much of a fresh break from the stale lands of EQ to not come back. I'll still be playing EverCrack, but I will play this game when I can boot trinity off the shiny new machine from time to time, since hers is the only one that can run it. Oh yeah, Trin saw me playing and seemed to be interested, so she might be creating a character too.

I'm on Pellinor/Hibernia with you guys..........right now I just need some advice on starting out. I'm an elf mage and I plan to be a Mentalist, but I have no idea what I should be doing with my specialization points......I had been spending them equally between Light and Mana magic, but someone told me that I should save them until I choose my class at level 5.......if it's that important my character is only level 4 and can easily be started over again :) I'd just like to know a few things about starting out and when I can catch any of you in the game.......I have missed you all.

one of the main reasons to save your points till level 5 is you get more skills at level 5 - generally class defining skills. So it is sometimes wise to save up till you get to 5 to spend those points, since you have access to more options then before.

Check out the character builder, link has been posted here a few times. It will help you out. :)

Wise choice on the mentalist too. Eldritches have some work to be done, but Mentalists have quite an arsenal to use at their discretion. Every caster I know from other realms constantly complains about dying to archers in the frontiers, except for the 41 mentalist friend of mine who hunts them specifically and brags about how he owns them, go figure :\

Archer hunting is fun. Makes me wanna be a nightshade too, and a ranger. Weasel stuff :)

dunno how a mentalist would be any better at taking down an archer than an eld.... maybe mez? i dunno... mentalists still wear cloth ;)

With the 'bladeturn' -- they get one shot, their crit shot -- wasted.

The mage the follows up with a stun or slow spell (or whatever).

Oops, can't run away!

cloth sux :p

I know I get a stun, mez and confusion(random switching of targets - no idea if this works in rvr) spell every couple levels/spec points.

I'm all excited about leveling up now.....RVR sounds like major fun.

It's the stuns and mezzes, Mentalists have more. Eld's specced in Void only have one, which is a short duration.

Depends on how they're specced tho, as with any mage. If you spec one line entirely for max damage you give up some utility spells, if you spec everything to half or two thirds, you have more of an arsenal to deal with to achieve the same end.

Spell range is about the same as arrow range, so casters are dangerous with bladeturn if they're smart enough to keep it up. I died to one just about 10 minutes ago...

Rangers are too much fun Morety. When you have your primary character filled out and decide to start another you should try one. They're a bit hard to level without a bankroll, so they're a better second character, a bit easier for you guys since you have guildmates to powerlevel you here and there. Once you get to about 39-40 you can literally walk around Midgard's frontier like you own the place :p
