Here is a little help from your friendly neighborhood Boom on how to make the most of your pet.

1. Your pet can learn 4 abilities. Bite (which is like a quick low damage attack), Claw (which is a slower higher damage attack), Growl (taunt), and Cower (detaunt).

2. If you tame a new pet, he loses all other abilities. So if you see some cool turtle or croc or bear or whatever that has a stun or a snare or something fun, don't think you can tame it and have a stunning or snaring pet. Once you tame it, it will just have bite, claw, growl and cower. Actually it probably won't even have all of those and you will have to teach it stuff.

3. Keep the right abilities on autocast! If you rightclick on a button on your pet's quickybar it gets glowy, or not glowy. If its glowy, then its on autocast and if your pet has enough mana, he will use it. If its not glowy, the pet will only use it if you actually click on it. I always keep bite and claw on autocast so if my pet is fighting he is biting and clawing his little heart out and I don't have to worry about it. When I am using him to tank, I keep growl on autocast so he keeps growling and getting agroo off me. I don't have cower on autocast because I don't want him detaunting and giving me agroo. If I am in a group and didn't want him to get agroo I would take growl off autocast and put cower on autocast, but I never really bother to do that. Basically, cower is almost worthless and I practically never use it. Just make sure its not on autocast otherwise you are wasting your pets mana on that crappy spell and your pet is both taunting and detaunting which is just silly.

4. Not all pets can learn all abilities. I like kitties cuz they can learn all 4. I am not sure about raptors, but since they are so popular I assume they can have them all. But you want a pet that can use bite and claw, unless you really just don't care or like the way the pet looks or something. If you want to learn more about what pets can learn what abilities check out this thread http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-hunter&t=155&p=1&tmp=1#post155

5. You must keep training new pets to learn new pet abilities! If your pet has bite 3, he will never upgrade to bite 4 by himself, you need to help him do it! This is what most hunters don't bother to do. This is what makes the difference between a hunter with a good pet and a hunter with a great pet. This is the reason I am writing this post (I assume all you hunters know most of this, but might need help with upgrading your pet abilities) I think I might be slacking on this a bit since its kind of a pain. But basically, there are 8 levels of bite/claw/growl/cower. If you don't bother to get the new abilities, its like a mage blasting with his level 2 blast for 30 damage when he could be using his level 8 blast for 250 damage. So lets say Fluffy has bite 3. How do you get him bite 4? Put him in the stable. Do not abandon him or you will lose him forever. And you can't just dismiss him or it won't let you tame another animal. You have to stable him. Go find an animal that has bite 4. Tame that animal. Then fight mobs with that animal as your pet for a little while. Eventually you will learn bite 4 from it. You won't get a message or anything, just keep checking your pet spell list till you see it there. When you learn it, abandon the new pet (unless you want to keep him for some reason, then you can stable him), go back to your stable and pull out Fluffy. Then hit your "train beast" icon. It looks like a slingshot. Teach Fluffy bite 4 and you are set. You love Fluffy right? He is your best friend, right? Doesn't he deserve the highest level of bite and claw that you can get him?

6. How do I know where to find animals with bite and claw 5,6,7, and 8????
Good question, I am glad you asked. Go to this link http://www.goodintentionsguild.info/hunters.html# Some guild made it up. I don't know how recently its been updated or whatever, but I have been using it and it works pretty good. So go into game and see what levels of bite and claw fluffy is currently using. Go to that link and see what are the highest levels of bite and claw you can learn, and go learn them for Fluffy.

7. Enjoy your now ublarified pet.
