View Full Version : Constant LD's last night

I played a couple of hours before our UT match last night and LD'ed twice. A bit of a pain but certainly workable. I got on after our match and LD'ed constantly. Sometimes being in the game less than a minute. I traced clean all the way to the gateway. I ran the adware program and there's nothing lurking in the background (rebooted twice). I've had other nights of good play so I'm pretty sure it's not just my system. I played both maps of the UT match and only lagged a couple of times during that match. Is Doac that sensitive to lag? Does it get worse during prime time(10-12)? Gonna be hard to advance a char if I can't stay connected:confused:

I've had problems like that too, Hammer. I can play all day with no problems and then for the following 2 hours I'll go ld every 5 minutes. Harm has tweaked and poked and prodded and done all sorts of stuff with my system, and it still happens. And it doesn't seem to necessarily coincide with peak hours either.

So I don't know what it is. Sorry. I'm on cable and maybe DAoC *is* just really sensitive to lag. I'm thinking seriously about switching to DSL, not just because of DAoC, but also because my pings on cable have gotten consistently worse.

Anyhoo. When I start going LD a lot, I've been rebooting. It seems to help. Maybe not. But it can't hurt, can it?

Some nights can be bad, but for me it's overall good. (Not including the times my isp si fUX0red.)

Unfortunately I'm in the boonies so cable is the only high speed option. But I don't think it's the cable. I get very solid connections in most of our UT games with little or no PL. It's striking that a game with no offline component would be so sensitive to lag. I wouldn't mind if I could off-line hunt some npc's until things cleared up. Oh well, hopefully last night was the exception and not the rule.

I've gotten dumped once - I think.

Never a problem for me.

What kind of connection do you have, Roo? I'd be curious to know the difference in frequency of LDs between cable users and DSL users.

hahahaha, I got all you suckers beat, I freeze up at least 10 times a night and I'm on dsl!!

It does start to p me off after a while, but I have had days, that I can play an hour or two without it freezing but those are few and far between.

I think this weekend, I'm a go buy a new floppy drive (so I can run a pc test I got) and open her up and reset all the cards, if that doesn't work, I'm really considering throwing this one away and buying new!!! I know I just got this one "custom made" but apparently something isn't "right" with it . It's just :fuct:

:D

:(

There's gotta be somethin' Sticky. I know those components are good (the brand on the GeForce is questionable, but I've never heard of a GeForce that the reference drivers don't work on).

Yall did format and start from scratch, right? You didnt just pop in the old hard drive from the old system did you?

I have DSL - but I have a solid ISP. I had a crappy ISP before this one (same DSL provider though). It makes a HUGE difference. If you think you're saving money by going with a cheaper ISP - there's a reason it's cheaper. They don't have the resources (ie, skilled techs or redundant systems) to truly handle a technology like DSL & the internet.

I don't suffer from LD's too much, but the crashes get me bad =P Especially when it takes 5 minutes to reboot (Norton Disk check... often finds lost chains and such resulting from the crash, or which caused the crash, or some damn thing).

I'm thinking it's related to the bad memory chip error i get when i scan my system (also with norton). which I just haven't gotten around to fixing =P It's my thinking that DAoC is god awful nit picky with hardware, or something. I used to get a fatal crash about every 1, 1.5 hours... got a lot better after some of the patches.

I'm also thinking about running WinXP, but I'm worried about the stability of that OS... I think you run it don't you Roo? How is it with DAoC?/Most games? Also, do I _need_ to get Office XP? Or can i stay with office 2000? (I think office 2000 cons green to WinXP right? ;) )

I am on a cable connection and I started getting the ld issue this past week. I was fine up until then.

I know that one of the devs had said something a few weeks ago about the daoc servers coming under denial of service attacks so I wonder if that is the issue.

Yup, I run WinXP Home (Pro is pretty much same thing).

I had problems with DAoC when I use to overheat (I've since replaced my case to increase cooling). It does seem DAoC is a bit anal retentive when it comes to stuff.

As well, had some problem with nVidia drivers pre 21.88.

Other than that, I love it.

Hubby bought me a new HD for my bday, so it was all new. It's basically a new machine, only thing from the old machine is the zip drive.

I don't think it's my dsl connect. It never gave me any probs on the old system. Anywho, I'm a try a few things this weekend, maybe even get someone who knows a little about computers out here one day. I'll keep you posted :)
