Canadian court approves same-sex marriage

By Beth Duff-Brown

Dec. 9, 2004 | TORONTO (AP) -- Canada's highest court said Thursday the government can redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, but it added that religious officials cannot be forced to perform unions against their beliefs.

The ruling by the court in Ottawa brings to the final stages a long, bitter fight over whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry in Canada.

Judges in six provinces and one territory have already overturned the traditional definition, allowing thousands of same-sex weddings.

Canada would join Belgium and the Netherlands in allowing gay marriage if the government acts to make it legal nationwide. To pass in the House of Commons, the legislation needs the approval of about 44 of the 95 Liberal backbench members of Parliament to obtain a 155-vote majority.

One top Liberal predicted the legislation should pass easily after its introduction, likely early next year. It already has the support of the 38-member Liberal cabinet and virtually all the 54 Bloc Quebecois and 19 New Democrat MPs.

because we have more important things to worry about.

exactly. Both of those things are more important. There's nothing going on in Canada, and nothing to do.

well Canada and America arnt the same places, and what is "right" in one place is not necessarily right in the other.

They do sound like they have formed up a decent law that allows for gay marriage. BUT the law of unintended consequences will strike:

http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2004/04/28/employers_cutting_domestic_partner_benefits_after_ gay_weddings/
Now that it's about to be legal for same-sex couples to marry, some Massachusetts employers are eliminating domestic partner benefits offered to gay workers, requiring them to say "I do" if they want to keep their partner on their health plan.
...
...
Effective May 17 -- the day same-sex partners can begin getting married in Massachusetts under a ruling issued by the state's highest court -- new hires that live in states that recognize same-sex marriage (so far, only Massachusetts does), will be required to be married to add their spouse to Beth Israel's benefit plans, Berger said.

Not an issue in canada with the Socialized medical plan, definately something to think about as this effects not only gays but straight couples that arnt married.

:rolly:

I guess you meant that to be rude, but it just makes me giggle.

To me, Canada is like this huge secret paradise, hidden in plain sight. The more the world discounts and ignores us, the better I like it.

So yes, please continue to think of us as unimportant and useless.

That's too bad because it looks like you will be getting some new neighbors. Maybe Thomas and his life partner Christopher, er now his husband.

HAHAHAHA you must be new to the political boards :)

In Canada it seems they sell Milk in bags along with the hard plastic containers... They say it is better that way...

oh..

it makes sense...

babies seem to like milk in fleshy bags, why can't we still enjoy a plastic Canadian reproduction in our adult years.

Do you drink from a plastic nipple?

Roscoes_C&W

They drink their milk out of a bag. They go to the store, throw a bag of milk over there shoulder(because there are no handles to grab onto), then they bring it home, put it into another container, and then cut the corner of the bag so that they can pour the milk out, and no it is not resealable.
