Hey, I would like to try an build myself a computer. Im not in the computer field, I just thought with most of todays plug n play components, I could probably get by.

What could i get with a budget of around 750?
Are there any good online sites for components?

Any suggestions?

$750...

Do you need a monitor? (I assume not)

Do you plan/want to use any of your existing parts (CD-ROM/Hard Drive/Floppy/Speakers) ?

What games do you play, and what is your current system?

And PM me if you live in Central/Western NC (I live near Charlotte).

Nah, monitors are just fluff, I can still get by with what i got here.

Nope, my current system is on the bottoms of DAOC standards, It is badly outdated, I can pass this one off to the wife for email. I have crappy speakers but sound card went out, so im using inboard sound. Basically no sound for year. Damn I sound pitiful. I can still use these speakers i guess.

DAOC is my main game, Neverwinter nights some, Halflife 2 is lookin promising, etc. I am just tired of playing games and being required to turn graphix to the minimum. Feels like its been years since I was past the midline on puter power. But $750 is all i got :) That is why Im asking advice. I live about hour and half north of you, Lexington, NC.

IF I can get a nice working system, I can always scrounge up the cash for monitor, speakers or accessories later. I am primarily concerned with proper working guts.

I can price you out something you'll be happy with (and I can build if you like).

Do you have a copy of XP (licensed, of course!) you can install? Or do you need that in the build price? (about $90 for XP Home SP2 OEM)

$750 will put you about the midline.

Do you need keyboard & mouse? anything fancy? wireless/usb ports on keyboard/5 button mouse/etc....

Any preference on case? Side glass/lights, etc...?

How is the airflow where it's going to be?

Shits easy on newegg. Thats why newegg rocks so hard and everyone reccomends it. I had problems with some of the hardware i baught from there, particularly a vid card that overheated and stopped working. I sent it back and they sent me a new one promptly, was very easy and no questions asked. You can find some things cheaper elsewhere if you do deal shopping and take your time buying things piece by piece and wait for smokin hot deals which come up all the time but it's alot more tedious and you save some on shipping buying everything at once through newegg. I have fun deal shopping though, go check out www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com). There's a forum for hot deals that has lots of computer stuff, some of it a true hot deal and some of it not so great they also got a product review forum. I recommend putting it all together yourself, cause it's fun. Gettin all the pieces and screwing on the mobo then pluggin in all the stuff, is fun!!!!

I've been visiting Anandtech for a LONG time. :)

I use pricewatch.com as well, but the reputable vendors are tougher to find. Anandtech has that new live time shopping thingy that is really nice.

Ya, Im lookin forward to doin it myself. I have always been that way. Im in the middle of adding 1000 sq' on my house. If I can figure out how to deal with building codes and inspectors, I think I can handle most stuff

Thanks

That is pretty nice Rooster to just whip together something that fast, cant beat experience. Now I have a working idea on what my price is in line for. Im still tweakin the financing, I may scrap another couple Bens up, all depends on, xmas. I cant do anything until I see how crazy the wife gets :uhoh:

I goofed. But, it should be okay by Christmas. That 6600 GT is only PCI-E. But nVidia just announced it's going AGP with that chipset, so it's all good. Just a matter of timing.

Do you like the athlon chips better? I heard they can have heat issues.

Rooster

Trust me.

Pentium 4E's run hotter than anything right now.

Athlon 64's are the coolest running CPU's.
