There are reports that Arafat has died. Will this hurt or help the peace process in the middle-east?

This is a no brainer. How could it hurt? There wasn't peace while he was alive so how could it hurt that he is dead? If anything it will help, or it won't do anything. There's no possible way it could hurt, because it's already at a low point. There's nothing but good that can come from it.

personally i think both arafat and sharron need to buzz off, sharron i don't see having done anything positive either.

big differences is that Sharron was elected, and can be removed by the people of Israel. It is their choice.

Elections in Israel are a joke. When I was there, they had a law up for vote that didn't allow pork to be sold on Sundays. The religious cabinet members knew it wouldn't pass because there were enough on the cabinet that didn't believe religion should play a part in government, so they change the cabinet vote day, didn't tell a decent proportion of the non-religious cabinet members, and guess what? The law passed.

Joke or not i dont know, there are similarly shady happenings here in the US and we dont believe our elections are a joke.
Still Israel is more of an democracy than Palistine... They were stuck with Arafish until he died. That was the only way he would give up power. Is Sharon in for life? I dont believe so, maybe they can jerry rig the system but I dont expect it.

He was needed to start the process but as long as he remains it will also remain stalled.

Roscoes is right on the money. There was never any peace before, so how could anyone else hurt it worse than it is...

The only way I can see it hurting is the vacuum created from the opening. We all know that there will be battles for who gets to fill that spot and then there is the risk that the people at large do not accept them as their new leader. If they hold general elections for it then I would agree with Roscoes.
