Can anyone make some recommendations for a good gaming LCD Monitor, with price in mind? I'm thinking of a 17". I don't really know which brands/models are decent, etc...

I'd go 19" LCD if you're considering it.
Most gamers I talk to prefer a good 19" monitor over a 17" LCD, but prefer a 19" LCD over a 19" monitor.
Me, I like the 19" monitor because it will do higher than 1280x1024 & I don't like ghosting (need sub-25ms refresh times on an LCD, preferably 16ms).

Damn, I was seriously hoping to free up desk space. My desk is completely taken over by my monitor :( (I have a 17" Nokia that's about 7 years old)
We use 19" Samsungs. I wish I could tell you how much they cost but we got them as Christmas presents from my brother who has too much money. They totally rock! I recommend LCDs for anyone that can afford them.
Now, how we're going to replace these things if they blow up, I have NO idea.

The good news for you is that a lot of the 19" monitors now are MUCH more compact than the models 7 years ago. :)

Of course, if you CURRENTLY have a 17" Monitor, going to a 17" LCD does get you an inch more of screen & clarity...
But, it's gonna run you about what a 19" monitor would.

I just dumped my 19" crt for a Samsung 193P and I love it. Although they are both 19", the lcd has a slightly bigger screen and the 20ms refresh rate is ok for the games I play.
I haved tried running at other resolutions than 1280x1024 and it looks terrible, you really need a graphics card that will let you play games at 1280x1024.

Pox,
Any of the Viewsonic monitors are excellent products. I have gone with them from old clunky full size screens, and got a 17" flatscreen last Christmas. They are excellent.

Why confused? So far everyone's been on the same page.
(btw, I have a 19" Viewsonic P95f+... CRT)

My monitor (an ANCIENT 21" Sony Trinitron) went out last year when cash was at a premium. I picked up a 19" Envision flatscreen CRT for about $200. I have to say I haven't regretted it. Nice performance, and we replaced the hubster's monitor with the same model when his went belly up.
I use a 17" LCD at work, and REALLY wish I had a CRT there. Too much distortion in the fine details for what I do (graphic designer).

Woot to that....I have a old sony trinitron E500 series....weighs 85 pounds but man its great....

It was gigantical, and after like 7+ years, was getting dim. It's replacement is doing quite well though, and I definitely have more space on my desk! I couldn't lift the Sony alone. I'm 5'4" tall, so my arms didn't span the monitor with enough give to support it and keep my center of gravity above my waist. doh! I can carry the new one> :)

I had a 21" monitor for a while. I found, at the distance I sit from it - I couldn't see the edges (periphery) of the screen without actually shifting my eyes... which (in UT) was a killer.

LCD's that do not cost a shitload tend to be crappy for gaming. The refresh rate on most of them are sub par and just end up being a paper weight.

Only because I was thinking a LCD would be great, so I could use my desk outside of just having a monitor and keyboard on it...although for the money, it seems I'd be much wiser to just get a 17" CRT that doesn't take up all that much space...

I guess - all depends on your wants or needs. You could go down to a 14" CRT too :D

It'd probably be cheaper to get a bigger desk. :)

I have a Nokia 21" CRT that I've had for about 3 years now. I <3 it, though it is definitely not a top of the line picture quality - it works great for games.

My boss made me dump a really nice 21" crt for a pretty standard 19" lcd, because he thinks lcds look more "professional" or something and he was too cheap to buy a good 20 or 21" lcd. The tools I use need as big a screen as I can get, but in many ways he is your typical pointy haired boss.

Ewww! I know I'm not a real fan of them. Beyond the small profile, I find false distortion of pixels, areas of the screen which are significantly darker, making it hard to judge color depth. Thankfully our production/prepress department are all on CRTs, as we do high end giclée reproductions. My title is marketing designer, so I do about 50/50 design on demand, and taking ideas from flicker to concept through all the stages in between, right up to launch. Less crucial than an inconvenience. I try to work basically in the honeyspot, where I feel I can trust the appearance a little more.
Tamm! I'm chuckling. I'll still look silly trying to move the 19" around, but at least I have a chance! I'm pretty sure I could only gracefully carry an LCD monitor. Everything else will be a physical comedy without the big star. :)
Roo, I found the same thing... 19" is about ideal for me, especially in gaming.
Pox, look around at some of the 19" CRTs. A lot of the boxes are more compact now than the old 17" CRTs, you may free up a little deskspace even with a CRT!

heard good things about Samsung lcd's, though Im still on an crt myself.
I know what you mean about deskspace so I set up a couple of tables around the desk for the rest of the junk that accumulates :)
Ive also heard that lcd's aren't typically good for high graphics (though I'd like to try it myself before truly believing it).
Anyone know anything about plasma?

pox,
samsung is coming out with some quality lcds.
I know viewsonic makes some quality lcds as well.
make sure you pick up an lcd with less than 25 ms refresh time. less than 16ms would be nice but less than 20 ms is still good.

I can't even imagine a 19" LCD's viable screen. The 17" LCD seems like so much more screen than my 17" Flat screen CRT....

It doesn't really matter, all I do is draw shit in autocad and post on LoL message board. Not like I can game it up at work.

Isnt the price difference like $500 between the 19 CRT and the 19 LCD?
If my monitor was flat it would still be in exactly the same place about 1.5 feet from my big fat head. The saving on desk space would exist behind the screen. Maybe my desk is abnormally large as I have two 19 CRT monitors, laptop, lamp, speakers, and lots of room left over for piles and piles of unopened mail. Hmm maybe I could use that space behind the monitors after all.

Well, Grundy, you're a consultant like myself, so that's actually your office as well as your desk. I can understand why things are like they are for you...(NERD).
My old setup on my desk was kinda funky, I had a 17" Nokia taking up 90% of a fairly large desk, and then a keyboard and mouse wedged in there somehow. Now I have my monitor taking up 10% of my desk, and I'm finally able to push the desk back up relatively close to the wall. The whole room looks bigger for some reason...

Go check out www.bensbargains.net (http://www.bensbargains.net) they have deals on LCD's daily. There's a couple decent looking deals Ben just put up today. Also check out www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) and check the "hot deals" forum and they also have a forum that covers all the consumer reports on different kinds and shit.

Pox's desk is totally loaded if it's anything like it is when I saw it :p
I use a Samsung 17" with a 12 ms response time. I bought it at best buy for about 400$, and then got 100$ on rebate. I have been very happy with it. I never knew how crappy CRT was until I switched...

I got me one of those Dell 2001FP (16ms response). 20.1" -- Wow.
Haven't tried playing a FPS yet, only WoW & Battle for Middle Earth (RTS). I do get 25-60fps in WoW @ 1600x1200 w/all graphics settings maxed.
