There's been a lot of interest lately (for reasons I can't fathom) in joining ]LoL[. You the reader may not recognize me, or not even know that I was in ]LoL[... as of late, I've been inactive, and I've never been the l33t players that my clanmates are. However, I do have as much say as the next man in our clan going-ons. So, I'm here to address ]LoL['s policy of recruiting players.
We often say that ]LoL[ has no recruiting process, and indeed many of you have been told this. That's a lie. It's certainly true, we don't put your through hurdles of "You must attain X kills against 3 different members in TDM" or critique your performance in CTF scrims. Frankly, we could give a rat's ass about your skill(z).
Our process, as such, mostly involves your getting to know us. We tell each and every prospective to hang out in our channel, #lol, in mIRC for jus thtis purpose. We want to know if you fit in. ]LoL[ is not your average clan... it's been around for a long time, and it's stayed fairly intact. This is due primarily to how well the members get along with one another. It's also due to our no-pressure, laid-back style (and orgies).
The most important criteria in whether or not anyone becomes a member of ]LoL[ is how well we, the entire clan, believe they will fit in. Of equal importance is good sportsmanship: being gracious losers and winners, behaving well, and so forth. Nowhere does skill factor into this equation. ]LoL[ is a for-fun, midlevel clan, not a highly competitive, top rung clan.
Once we get to know you, the entire clan is polled. And that's the recruitment "process" such as it is.
It's certainly a different process from every other clan out there, and understandably can be difficult for some to understand. We just want you to chat with us, let us get to know you as a person, show us you are ]LoL[ material.
On the other hand, if you sit in our chat channel, day after day, saying nothing beyond "how long do I have to know you guys before I can join ]LoL[?", that's a pretty bad sign. While it might sound like an innocent thing to say, it isn't; here's why.
1. It sounds an awful lot like sitting in our chat channel is some sort of odius task that you'd rather not be doing. Well, aside from the fact that as a clan member you'd be sitting in our channel a whole lot, it really does sound as if you don't care about anyone in the clan, only about getting in the clan (this also makes little sense).
2. "Have to know you guys" - no one is forcing you to "know us" at all. But again, it sounds as if the clan members are merely some sort of hurdle or task to be finished before membership is granted. It certainly doesn't sound as if you like the members, or even want to know them.
3. "Knowing us" would already provide the answer to the question. However, this process isn't a one way street. We have to know you as well. We want to know what kind of person you are, both in the game (in terms of conduct) and outside of the game. There are a dozen people who are in #lol who never say anything. What makes you more special than them?
It should be noted that kissing up is not the way to go. No one likes fake actions with some sort of 'ulterior motive'.
So there it is folks. The How-To guide for Joining ]LoL[. Before anyone gets too excited though, keep in mind that the clan really is FULL. We make sure anyone who wants to play gets to, and almost no one really ever leaves the clan. So as it stands, ]LoL[ is not actively recruiting, and is full. If we were just accepting people based on some minimum skill level, or clan would be 3 times as large, and 1/10th as cool.
