View Full Version : What's the connection between PB&J and Vietnam?

When asked recently why he eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Kerry said he developed a taste for them in Vietnam.

Lol, OK ... time to take it down a notch there, tiger. :rolly:

Which makes me wonder, if he had such a bad experience there (his own accounts), why would he WANT anything he liked there?

I dunno, Rooster. I guess he must have had a wonderful time in Vietnam. :p

I doubt his bad experiences happened while he was eating pb&j sammwiches, our minds are relational things, he probably ate pb&j's with friends during quiet times where they sat around and shot the shit. Probably the most memorable (postive) thing about the place; commraderie.

That's entirely possible.

Ivyrielle asked her dad about this.

His response was something like "Yeah the first thing that comes to mind about Vietnam is PB&J sammiches o.O."

What a memory to have about a 4 month combat tour where you are killing people? Kerry is a sick man IMO.

Kerry: "During the time I was blowing up and shooting all those Viet Cong, whilst dodging bullets and mines...I came to love my PB&J sammiches, it was only 4 months of duty, but man, that pot was good and we had the munchies!"

Ok - more importantly.....what kind of moronic reporter would waste their breath on a sandwich question?

Lol, way to miss the point there, Badger.

Let me see if I understand you. First, you ask Ivy's dad about the validity of Kerry's statement that he ate a lot of PB&J sandwiches in Vietnam. Second, you come to the conclusion that Kerry is a sick man because he ate a lot of PB&J sanwiches in Vietnam?

I'm curious, what did the non-sicko eat in Vietnam? :rolly:

Lol, seriously, Kerry has been a bit amusing trying to get the phrase, "When I was in Vietnam" worked into the answer for every question he's asked. But your assertion that he's a sicko is so right field I have to squint to see it.

First, no, he stated that I asked my father what he thought about the Kerry's statement. (Based directly off of your post here, Allison, because I'm not sure where the interview occurred).

Badger didn't get it quite right... It was much more like... "Hrm... how many peanut butter sandwiches did I eat in Vietnam..." He said he couldn't think of a single time a peanut butter sandwich was available to his activated National Guard Unit, serving with the U.S. Army in the jungles of Vietnam.

My reaction is pretty much in line with Rooster's on this one. I'm very perplexed that one would develop a comfortable attachment associated with a time in one's life that one has been so vociferous in speaking out against. And where the hell did he get peanut butter sandwiches anyway? :P

That would be like me wanting spaghetti MRE's because they were the best MRE's I could get when I was in Egypt for 3 weeks. Hardly!

Hehe, Ivy. No offense, intended. My remarks to Badger were tongue-in-cheek.

I made this thread in response to a Los Angeles Times piece that was poking fun at how candidates will try to slip in anything they can to make themselves look good, even in response to a mundande question like, "Why do you like PB&J sandwiches.?"

It's widely reported that Kerry loves his PB&Js. A reporter asked him why. I haven't seen Kerry directly quoted, but it's reported he said something to the affect that he developed a taste for them in Vietnam. I thought it was funny and a bit over the top, him reminding us of his service, even when asked about PB&Js. I thought people would get a chuckle from it.

But, it's absurd to assume anything sinister from it. I have no doubt that swift boats were better stocked than infantry units. Heck, they were able to cook fried eggs for breakfast. I have no doubt that PB&Js were also available. Maybe he sat on the deck of his swift boat during quiet times, eating a PB&J, reminiscing of home and thinking, "Thank God for America. Thank God for this yummy PB&J." What's so sinister about that?

I'm sure there are soldiers who served in the jungles of Vietnam who, at one time or another, stared at the stars, thinking of home, trying to find a moment of solace. Are they to hate the stars? Are they sickos if they now look upon the stars at night? It's just silly to assume anything of the sort.

they sat around and shot the shit.
No wonder we did not win that war... The north was shooting at us and we were busy shooting shit...
