View Full Version : Pat Tillman, even MSNBC can screw this one up.

"This is the cost of war in Afghanistan and Iraq: the loss of so much promise and potential. More than 800 American men and women have now died in the military effort, and thousands have been wounded. American troops tend to be honorable but anonymous—working-class or poor, disproportionately black, brown or rural. If they come home, they often return to quiet lives as clock punchers. But in Tillman, the sacrifice of war suddenly bears a face of stardom. The Pentagon can try to block images of flag-draped coffins. But Tillman's death is a startling billboard of grief, a reminder that these lost soldiers—all of them, famous or not—had so much left to give." [emphasis mine]

After they honor him throughout the article, they go and show their true colors. They mourn for what THEY think these people should be doing with their lives. They never once consider that this *IS* what they want to do with their lives, to fight so that others don't have to, or can't. They totally disrespect those that make that final sacrifice.

Piss on that.

I don't see anything that implies Tillman wasn't doing exactly what he wanted. That section you quoted is saying that he is a reminder of the sacrifices all our soldiers are making. Maybe you read it to mean that joining the military was a waste since he had so much to give in other areas, but I think it's just saying he, and others who've died, had a lot left to give, period.

Maybe the "flag-draped coffin" remark put you in defensive mode, because I think you're reading something into that article that isn't there. ;)

I think he's saying that they might be doing what they want to in life: soldiering, career military.

But, the article seems to be aiming for statistics and the amount of soldiers that stay in the military as a career is probably low enough to ignore at this point. As for "so much left to give" these soldiers that died obviously did, no matter what they decided to do with their live (be it military or otherwise) there is a ton they could have contributed to the world.

Our buddy from the Beyond Unreal forums, LiquiD_SiN is over there now. Haven't seen anything from him posted since he left. I hope Timmy's okay.

So much left to give... that's my beef...

THEY GAVE all they could, ALL that was asked. There was no more to give. He gave where others wouldn't, so others don't have to.

By saying all the soldiers that have died "had so much left to give"... is taking the pity route. It's disrespecting their sacrifice. These men are not to be pitied, nor are their families. Pat gave up millions in the NFL to do what he felt was right. He didn't grandstand on it, or do it for the praise.

Yeah, they take a cheap shot at the Pentagon's photo ban, but that's not my issue.

Since when has the Left cared about the sacrifices our soldiers make?

Yeah, never.

I agree with you on this one Roo... (like that surprises anyone)

What more could they possibly have left to give than their lives? All this seems to care about is what he had left to give THEM. Pretty selfish if you ask me.

and the amount of soldiers that stay in the military as a career is probably low enough to ignore at this point.I meant to comment on this earlier. You know WHY people aren't staying in? Because they're getting shit on by the government. All the benefits (ie, things that make it actually financially feasible to have a family or whatnot) were stripped away by Clinton. And there's no amount of budget restructuring that Bush can do to get those benefits back once they're gone. Clinton gutted the military's ability to retain people.

You are correct Rooster, I was there when he took office and saw it happen first hand.
