I've been watching Band of Brothers this week on the History channel, and damn, there're some interesting shows there. They had this whole thing about U-Boat hunting in the Gulf of Mexico in 1942, and how this one captain of some ship was harshly critisized (and nearly court marshalled) for letting some U-boat get away, when it turns out that 60 years later, they find proof that he actually sunk it...

Do any of you guys watch this stuff...seriously, this has gotta be the most interesting TV ever...

Airr doesn't let me watch the history channel. Something about not enough laughs...

And History Channel is cool :)

Yep, I like the History channel and Discovery Wings. Band of Brothers is a pretty damn awesome mini series.

I can't remember the name of this one I really like but it's something like Hollywood vs History. They take a popular movie about some event in history and have several historians discuss the accuracy of the movie during breaks. I remember them doing Braveheart which is a movie that I really like, but it was pretty low on the historical accuracy rating.

Tales of the Gun is another good one.

The best show I ever saw on the History Channel was an episode of this BBC documentary on the history of weaponry. Can't remember the name. The episode was on the history of the sword. They had stuntmen going through long-sword duels. Man, those big swords could fly!

I am a bigger fan of the Science channel... History channel just got old (no pun intended). Most of the time it is a re-run of some WW2 thing or how peral harbor was attacked...

Actually, it's quite often about numerous island battles in WWII, as each one presented different challenges and learning oppurtunities in warfare.

Pearl Harbor is not every island battle.

My wife told me that in school, Japanese students learn that the Japanese gave fair warning to the government of the United States prior to Pearl Harbor, but that our government covered up the fact so that they could include America in the war against Japan. I tried to explain that we'd have gone to war against Japan regardless of "fair warning", because regardless, the Japanese were bombing an American facility. She didn't quite get the point...

This is in the politics and religion forum because some of the stuff involved with war, etc has a political backing, where opinions differ depending on the side taken. I figured this thread would probably inevitably become interesting over time as folks discuss progs from the History Channel.

Btw, oddly enough, my Grandpa turned me onto the History Channel. All of his siblings served in WW2, and so he has a great deal of nostalgia when watching anything on that channel...so one day when visiting him, I sat down and watched a bit, and it caught me.

Does anyone remember a magazine called "Spy"? They were a satirical broadsheet out of New York. One day, many many moons ago, when cable was just expanding, they ran a piece about the "Hitler Network". They basically did a spreadsheet of what WWII shows were on what network. Essentially, they charted out how you could watch WWII shows 24 hours a day by changing channels.

Twas quite a funny little blurb.

I do know that before the History Channel was made, Discover would be called the "Death Channel" for all of the war programming it carried.

I have seen a bunch of History channel coverage of the Japanese warning about the attack. It says that basically it took the Japanese ambassador too long to translate the declaration to english thus turning it into a "Surprise" attack. But you're right, warning or no, it would have been on. The shows indicate that mistake was a great source of dishonor for the Japanese.

Okay, how's this for strange. I was talking to my mom the other night, and told her about that sub hunt in the Gulf of Mexico thing that I watched on the History Channel. She asked whether or not I saw the pictures of the captain who tried (and actually did) sink the first U-Boat. I explained that that guy's son was given the medal for his father (who'd since passed away). My mom explained that this captain's son, was the man she was going to marry, prior to her meeting my dad...rofl...small world.
