What do you guys think of this: (original (http://slatest.slate.com/id/2250316/entry/1/))
Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a top aide to Colin Powell when he served as Secretary of State, claimed in a signed statement filed on behalf of a Guantanamo detainee that former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld "covered up that hundreds of innocent men were sent to the Guantanamo Bay prison camp because they feared that releasing them would harm the push for war in Iraq and the broader War on Terror," the Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article7092435.ece) reported. Guantanamo initially held more than 740 detainees in 2002, and the document obtained by the Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article7092435.ece) claims that "the majority" of them were innocent. The statement was filed with the lawsuit of Adel Hassan Hamad, a man who was held at the island prison for over four years. Hamad claims he was tortured during his time at Guantanamo. To be fair, Wilkerson is a long-time critic of the George W. Bush administration, and spokesmen for Bush and Rumsfeld refused to comment and declared the accusations completely untrue, respectively. It reasons, though, that nobody would know better than Gen. Colin Powell and it "is understood"—according to the Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article7092435.ece)—that he has backed Col. Wikerson's statement.
