They track the internet's browsing. Google, for instance, gets 30% of all page hits on the entire internet.

There are claims that Alexa is biased toward the tech community because it tracks internet views based on the people who use its toolbar. If you use that toolbar and visit your own site every day, that could be why yours appears more popular. That being said, companies that are trying to determine the value of a web site use Alexa as a significant factor in determining the actual worth of a site.
