So I guess the collector's edition is all sold out now, so I was thinking of just pre-ordering so I can get in the open beta and try it out. What is the best way to pre-order?
I assume pre ordering from a place like Amazon would suck b/c you wont receive the game until a few days after it is even out. Is this true?
I was thinking maybe going with Direct2Drive would be better since I can have it right away.
What are you guys doing?

I would suggest NOT playing Open Beta.... there has been a big discussion in the office (a game studio)... that those subjected to Beta Testing... are more likely to leave a game after launch because of the preceived issues with the game over time.... when in fact the game wasn't ready... (or near ready) until the actual launch date...
Let them fix some stuff... get the "best" they can before you EVER see the game.... it will give you a better "first" look... and "first" playtime experience...

You can go to Gamestop, Best Buy, Target, and about a thousand other places to preorder the game. Even if you don't care about the open beta, there's still the head start on the live game and a few items to get you started to make it worth it. Plus, you get $5.00 off the game itself on release.
I'm planning to be in open beta simply to give myself a chance to try out as many classes as possible to help me decide which one to play. There are so many that look like fun, it makes it difficult to decide.
As usual, I'll probably wind up bouncing between several different classes and realms before finally settling on one as a main.

IMO no sex before marraige makes you think the sex in marraige is more amazing because you're 1) strung out from waiting and 2) have nothing to compare it to.
Open betas are bad because MMOs usually suck, and the open beta lets people get in and see how shitty your product really is--get the urge to try it out of their system, and move on, as a free thinking adult should be able to move on.
Game (singular) is not, really, a sustainable subscription service. Games (plural) is sustainable. It's not fair to people to exploit their behavioral psychology in order to increase the chance that they'll stick, with gambling rewards, anticipation, and social pressure. If WHO is a good game, then open beta won't kill your interest level, just like it didn't kill interest in WoW or CoH (for me). What kills my interest is pure liquid shit pouring out of my computer into my ears, mouth, and nose.

Have you played in the last 3 months? I remember you having the same distaste way back when I first got in the beta for WAR. I would assume that if you hated it that much you stopped playing it since then.
Just curious what you hate so much about the game right now. I remember you complaining about the UI which has been revamped since the revamp and is actually very nice now. Not sure what else you hated so bad.

i look at it this way, for $50...its worth to try it out and see if its better than AOC. I liked AOC, but for some reason it doesnt give me the warm and fuzzies anymore. I pop on here and there, but i am not all that excited to play it.
I hope people stick with WAR or AOC....just need people to play something with

In fairness, I just finished redownloading it and playing some more.
My opinion still stands. About the fecal matter. The art is getting better, as I'd expect, and I'm still happy with the artists and unhappy on what a tremendous piece of shit they're wasting their time on.
It's not specific interface features that have to do with polish so much as the fact that the interface, like it's always been, is squirrely. There are delays on mouseover effects, and when you try to get it to react, often times it doesn't give you good feedback on why it *isn't* reacting. The extent that it's basically getting so close to WoW as to make no real difference, it's still doesn't have the feeling of responsiveness, which isn't saying much, but moreso than any of that, MMO combat mechanics are totally bullshit in general, but I feel like WHO is about giving me the illusion of more participation by making me push buttons more often, but still using that mana/recharge based underpinning from everquest that's slower. So sometimes, when it actually is implemented to be more particpatory, it feel slike jenky busy work, and when it *isn't* it's even more boring. They also seem to have fallen short on communicating a feeling of impact that makes me feel like I'm doing something to the enemy.
These are all kind of ethereal qualities that don't come down to something like 'use brighter colors' or whatever. It has to do with their entire approach being wrong. If DAOC wanted to enter the next generation of MMOs--they should have ripped of City of Heroes more than they did. For one thing, the warhammer world has more in common with the generic hero-generating qualities of CoH--where your characters look different and customized (people hack together miniatures to make their heroes, and use custom paint schemes or whatever), rather than the uniform kind of WoW look to a particular archetype. But even ignoring all of that, the basic combat in CoH which is more mobile, and is about animation time, rather than arbitrary stand-still-while-I-cast-this time, and, also, about the animations, which were easier to see and really well done, rather than some weird swing that has a big obscuring 'blam' type graphic effect that doesn't give you a sense of what's going on. In general, they just limited the shit out of themselvse. WHO should be over the top, like that PR asshole makes it seem--but this is a game that is totally and completely mundane. They should be on-upping WoW, instead they're aiming to be similar and falling short.
Basically, if you come out after another product did and youd idn't incorporate the lessons learned--especially when you're obviously trying hard to do the exact same thing--it's unacceptible. I mean. I'm still disappointed and annoyed that, in a game that emphasizes mounted combat, and flying mounted combat, and spells that let you fly and all this other stuff, there isn't any mounted combat, and not flying anything, so far, other than a goofy orkapult that sends you to the top of a wall somewhere.
And no transportation system, still. Which is... Meh.

I remember mark mentioning something about Mounts in a recent post.....
As for the pre-ordering -- I did mine through Amazon.com. Its been easy and simple the whole time. It may not be for you, but that is my experience. If you go to a brick & mortar store, be careful that you get what you want before you pay for it. IE: Don't take 'we'll have those promotional items later' or 'we're out of them' at face value.

Like what Golmacmourna says, but ill sum it up a bit more:
Melee sucks, slow, boring, totaly can read a book while pushing buttons. Very DAOC like in its earlier days.
Magic sucks a little less, spell effects are weak, cannot affect casting time (or so it seems), only damage output slightly.
Movements sucks the most, 1 speed for every one, everyone gets the same sprint ability which uses all your action points, however many you have left, and you all get the same sprint timer (like 8 seconds).
Its all so dumbed down from DAOC its not funneh, nothing really made it through as far as i can tell, and so many people are expecting WHO to be an RVR upgrade from DAOC, whereas is a big downgrade.
Im trying to work up some energy to order it, but i havnt even made my first trip to the preorder webpage to even see it yet (bad sign).

1. melee is a bit slow I agree there, I also miss queing next style/spell.
2. Speed I don't mind, at least we are all equal.
3. This isn't DAOC (not to offend) this isn't even DAOC 2 (I wish) I didn't expect to be. People that expected it to be this way shouldn't have unless it said DAOC 2.
Over all the more I played and got use to it, liked it a little better. Oh I could tell you way it is like DAOC zergs, hehe casters camping hills. XP in rvr, that there is RvR. I could prob got on but need get kid to soccer. :)

Keep in mind that it hasn't actually been released yet. A lot of those things can still be brushed up before release. Especially due to feedback from players.
This weekend was not to show people the finished product. It was a preview.
No, it's not perfect. Probably never will be if you ask a developer... I really did like the overall feel of it though. Some of the concepts they've brought into this game were great, such as the public quests and the journal thing (I forget it's proper name). I expect that by release, things will be a lot smoother and more complete.

WAR is alot slower than DAoC (melee, casting and traveling), however this is a total WIN imo. DAoC used to be sooo much slower pre TOA and that was fun. Fights that are over in a matter of few seconds aint fun.
The combat certainly is not as fun as in AoC, but at least the RvR system works. ;)
Calain and me are going to order the US version.
and the classes are actually all quiet fun. many abilities, lots of flexibility with spec and choice of morale and tactics.
and no >1 minute AoE CC == the win, also collision detection yay!

I agree. The game wasn't designed AS a shooter, to REPLACE a shooter or to placate people that prefer shooter games. It's not the speed that matters as much as it is the quality. Ask any married man... or woman for that matter. (That was for you Mo)
It's nice to see people pointing out the positive things for a change and not picking it apart with every little pixel that may have been out of place.
