probably not. too boring
Something we'll want to get right on is a PQ plan. Man they make PvE about 100x more bearable.

07-30-2008, 08:24 AM
What's a PQ plan?!
public quest. You walk into an area and you're a part of that public quest. You contribute by taking on the goals of that quest (usually kill little guys at the first and then kill a boss at the end), and then you get to roll for loot among other things.
While I can't comment on it too much because of the NDA, PQ's are pretty much the best addition to questing since putting a question mark above an NPC's head.
Elvtin
07-30-2008, 04:27 PM
OH!!.. I know all about Public Quests.. :) I just didn't get the acronym for it.. lol.
was interested, but all the interest has just gone... really going off the pvp side of things, which this game is heavily about. and the fact they cut a huge amount out at such an advanced stage just doesn't fill me with encouragement. for now, going to pass on this one, might change my views over time, but they've got a lot of proving to do for that.

and the fact they cut a huge amount out at such an advanced stage just doesn't fill me with encouragement.
I had the opposite reaction. From my view for a company to do that shows they care about the quality of there game and choose to release with only aspects of the game that have the level of quality they think their customers deserve.
They promised a lot in the beginning like all game companies do, they need to build the hype. They got close. A few of the things they cut were actually functional but just not up to the level they wanted.

Im back in the beta, and it looks alote more polished than i remember, especially the logining in and chosing your character etc.
But, the combat still feels slow and clunky.

By the way, who is going to be running this segment? Would we be going Order or Destruction? I was in the Fianna in daoc and I know they are going to go destruction on one server. If you guys go Order I can play on your guys' server as an alt. Wouldn't mind having both kinds.

Oh my god, i cant do it. I just spent another hour trying to get into this.
Slow ? you have no idea how slow. Anybody who played AOC melee will die of total boredom within an hour of playing a melee character in WHO.
Whereas AOC melee was immersive, fast and interesting, WHO is slow, cumbersome and boring beyond belief.
You could almost read a book whilst meleeing an equal level mob.
I really dont see how mythic think this game is going to bite anyone.
Think DAOC in its early days, one on one with a yellow, a hero with sword and board (where it took like a full minute to kill a mob), and thats about it in WHO.
Content is great, interaction is good, but combat (whcih is like the most important thing in an MMO for me) is just not there.
Now, at level 31 (its a template, thats how they are starting people in the beta at the moment), i have over 7000 hits. My biggest attack is 104 damage. Now, this is modified, but a good hit with a crit i do around 250. Now, imagine me against another level 31 greenback with a shield !!!
And did i mention the graphics ? Think Wow, but, not as good. Sure i know its not copying wow, wows copying WHO (in a time paradoxical kind of way), but im talking quality, not looks.
However, the only options for graphic settings in the beta at the moment is "Best quality", "best framerate" and a couple of others. No options to customize stuff, though i am playing at 1680 x 1050.
Nope, not impressed. LoTRO graphics are better, AOC graphics are better.

Shilah, hurry up and hit RR12 so you can be a full time WAR player :D
I am in the preview weekend as well and will be rolling with the Fianna for this game since I joined them after my original guild disbanded in daoc. All of you LoL guys should join us - I had a good time with everyone in AoC but got burnt out on it quick. I am probably going to roll a Squig Herder first, and maybe a witch elf or marauder to try out. Most likely I will be a squig herder once the game comes out (since I really only played my ranger in daoc and like archers). I do LOVE the idea of a white lion, but since everyone seems to be going destruction I don't want to be alone.
I will be on most likely as Nomec for my starting toon whatever race/career that may be. I pretty much am going to sacrifice my social life this weekend for this game. Hit me up this weekend and let's beat up on some order!

got a question on the patcher. When I downloaded from Fileplanet it just downloaded one big folder... I assume if I bought the CD, that is the folder that would be created when I install the game, correct? B/c when I use the setup.exe from the big folder I downloaded I then get the patcher and an entry in my program files in my control panel. I get nothing in my /program files or whatever like I do when I install a normal game. I am confused!!
Kegg OBeer
08-21-2008, 04:49 PM
I'm not sure I'm following you 100% on this, but it sounds like you usually install to a /program files/gamefolder type of directory. This one downloaded for me directly to it's own folder and running setup.exe gave me desktop icons and whatnot. You don't have to install anything to the program files folder for it to work, that just more of an organizational thing than anything else.
I'm sure if you wanted to, you could redirect the installation once you install from a CD and make it something like C:/program files/WAR or something to that effect, but it wouldn't really change anything.
If I understood your problem, I hope this helps. If I didn't, then it's probably no use at all... ;)
nomec
08-21-2008, 05:08 PM
You followed me correctly, actually. Yeah, setup.exe only gives you desktop icons and all that, but does not include adding a directory. I just found it weird b/c normally I install files from fileplanet or whatnot into my "downloads" directory. I will just move this folder to it's own directory in my program files then. I won't have the CD version either as I bought the game on Direct2Drive so I guess I'll be using the same path even when the game is released.

The BETA download isn't the actual game. What you did when you ran setup.exe was basically 'unlock' or enable the files in the location you downloaded them to. I was reading about it on WHA. There is an unanswered debate going on about whether or not folks like ourselves will be able to patch into the full version after entering the CD key, or if we'll have to reinstall and download etc etc.
On a separate note, I feel lonely. I know only two other people who are joining me on Order, lol.
We still haven't picked a server either.

I must have done something wrong because I crash every time I get into the game. My graphics are not refreshing correctly for some reason. My video card seems to be more than adequate, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.
Anyone have a suggestion or know where I can get some help fixing this? I'm running out of ideas fast...

I know WHO had some issues with Nvidia a while back and if you are using old drivers it might be occuring for you.
Kegg OBeer
08-22-2008, 11:57 AM
I just updated every driver possible... I'm thinking I may have some corrupt files since my video is fine in every other aspect besides this. I can see up close persons and objects just fine, it's everything in the distance that's causing the problem...
Even if I just stand still and do absolutely nothing it crashes on me. The video thing may be distracting me from the real problem of a corrupt file somewhere. I guess I have to re-download it and try again as my next step?

08-22-2008, 04:40 PM
I tried that as well. If it were everything in the game having graphic problems, that'd be one thing. I think maybe I had a bad download because I could get in just long enough to let everything load, THEN it would crash.
I'm almost finished re-downloading it now... Keeping my fingers crossed.

08-22-2008, 06:37 PM
Argh! It looks like the problem is my video card after all. Since mine isn't listed in the readme as a supported card, but is well within the minimum specs, it looks like I'm on my own to figure out the right settings to make it work, if it ever will...
Would have been nice to know this before now. Since my card meets the minimum specs, I never imagined this would be a problem.
Oakwing
08-23-2008, 02:39 PM
Well, "full" is not quite right. Next time I logged in it took me directly to this server. I spent last night (about 9 hours) leveling a Chaos, fighter / healer dude. Fun stuff but no sign of any lions, yet. I did see some Fianna, but Alvirip didn't respond to my tell. Mortey, I collected 1 or 2 squig herder items in my adventures, waiting you to come claim them.

I just picked some random low pop server. Barrak was way too overcrowded and had issues with being full.
I have to say the scenario was fun. Think I gained a few levels just doing scenarios. The game still needs a bit of polishing. Mob AI was annoying, it kept running in wildly random directions. The casting animation isn't accurate and it's hard to tell when spell casting started and stopped. You end up just having to spam everything to make sure it went through. Quests were easy to do and public quests were a nice break from solo game play.
Sorcs were crazy strong 1-11. Other classes I've played had problem with running out of action points but not Sorcs. I could spamm spells like crazy and not run out. They got long range strong DD, AE DD, pbAE and pb AE root. Not to mention a nice Dot, and a sleeper dot that hits pretty hard after 15 secs.
Magus is weak and fragile 1-11. Pets don't work out. You could tell it to attack something and they wouldn't attack. It's very meh. Low dps and their debuffs suck.
Shamans are fun to play 1-11. Leveled this toon up pretty quickly solo. To be effective shamans have to dps and heal. Survivability is a problem though, once a melee or two gets on him, he's toast. The hots just aren't strong enough to tank a melee.
faeldan
08-25-2008, 02:25 PM
with a squig herder action points replenished fast enough unless i was in heavy rvr.. but i got to Renown 10 . My problem was pet pathing, he would either stand still then run opposite of the mob then rubberband back right at him. or the mob would stand there let me hit him 3 times then come running at me.
i tried a marauder and he did awesome in pve but rvr he died too damn fast, if u dont have a ranged dps inrvr ur toast unless ur a tank.
i only got him to lvl 10

I was finally able to get on Sunday morning after resolving my issues...
I tried as many classes I as I could on both sides of the fence. I can see now that I will have to have many many alts on a couple of servers...
My favorite Destruction toons were:
Sorcerer :owned: (my #1 favorite of everything I tried out)
Witch Elf :hump: (she outdamaged pretty much everything I played and she was SMOKIN hot too!)
Squig Herder :cheese: (Greenskins are just plain fun... did anyone else realize they're asexual?)
None of the others were 'bad', those were just my favorites. I did like the Magus and did pretty well with him, but it didn't click as well as these others. Maybe once the Magus pets work better I'll try one again. I tried the marauder and deleted him after I hit level 2... The Chosen was much more interesting and fun IMO. The DoK was interesting, but just not my cup of tea I think. I was going to try a Shammy, but I was having too much fun riding the catapult with my Squig Herder... (BTW if you didn't try this, you NEED to roll a toon just for that. I laughed my ass off!)
My Favorite Order toons were:
Engineer :owned: (This was head and shoulders my favorite on the Order side. He kicked ass!)
Swordmaster  (tried several tanks and this was easily my favorite one to play)
Bright Wizard :eh: (Almost identical to the Sorc, I just didn't like the empire zones too much)
I never got to try the shadow warrior. Looks like a cool class, but I can tell right away they'll be overpopulated. They were EVERYWHERE! White Lions had cool pets but I just didn't click with the melee/pet class combo... Maybe it'll grow on me? Didn't try the Archmage, Warrior-Priest, Witch Hunter, Ironbreaker or Rune Priest either. Losing the first two days kinda hurt me on time to try them all... ;)
Now I just have to chomp my nails till the 7th so I can pick up where I left off. I'm also interested to see what they'll have tweaked by then.

Hey there! Well looks like I decided to play WHO and pre-ordered from Amazon. It shall be fun to play with you all again. :p
It's a tossup between black orc, shaman or disciple. I like being a healing class for its necessity, and I'd like to duo with my brother, so while I have a favorite from necessity:
(1) disciple (2) shaman (3) black orc
I actually like playing them in the opposite order (but still very close to one another). I'll probably make one of each and see how I like them as I get up in the levels.

I tried a few different character classes during the preview weekend and here are my thoughts.
Destruction, my favorite side.
Squig Herder: Meh, didn't really like it too much though in the past I have always favored ranged/archer classes.
Dark Elf Sorcerer, fun. Good ranged damage class. Your typical glass cannon.
Greenback healer, I have never really been a fan of the healer class, but I liked this one. Most likely my favorite.
Chaos fighter/tank, not bad, could be better.
Greenback fighter/tank, more fun than Chaos.
Order, well I tried one class on Order, the Witch Hunter, a melee/DPS class. She hits pretty hard, but has a glass jaw, gotta watch your back with this one. Only got to lvl 7 before the preview weekend came to an end.
I have been a fan of the Warhammer universe and Games Workshop for quite some time. Mostly Warhammer 40k. I have a bug army I painted 5 years ago sitting in a tackle box out in the garage. When will they use Tyranids in a game?!?!?! (I know genestealers have been used in some past video games, not quite the same) Oooo, better yet a movie!

dont judge the classes pre level 20. The feel of combat and each class was much better at L31 (focus PvP tests).
I played engineer, Chosen and DoK. All were fun in their own way. Engineer, Magus and Squick herder are getting some improvements pre-launch still.

As long as they fix the Magus pets, I may still switch back to them. I did like playing that toon a lot even without it. I 'really' loved the Sorcerer though. I'll have to work out my issues during open beta I guess...
And still... that witch elf was a HELL of a lot of fun. Plus there's the bonus of them having to be hot chicks. I may have to give her an ugly face so my wife won't think it's computer game porn. :hump: :hump: :hump:
