So, it appears we have some critical mass around this game, which is a good thing. I've officially uninstalled DAoC and WoW in anticipation of Warhammer. However, this little forum has piqued my interest in AoC.

Consequently, being a guy with more money than good sense, I rushed out and picked up the game over lunch today. With that in mind, I feel the need to start my normal "OMG I have this new game and I need info" thread. :p

Morety, you seem to be the guy who always answers my initial plea. Your early advice on water beetles in Mag Mell will go down in history. I never would have known there was a subway between Stormwind and Ironforge without you. What sage advice would you offer before I login for the first time tonight. Some questions that come to mind:

1. Is there anything stupid I can do during character creation that I may regret later?

2. Knowing I sometimes play at weird times, what chars are currently considered to be a good mix of solo ability with at least something to offer a group?

3. Any PBAE chars? I would love to be a hero at the "Fin Tree" again! :rolly:

4. I get that Zug is the Lion server of choice. Is there an equivalent of a realm or other choice I need to make to ensure I can be in our guild/clan?

I guess those are the main things I need to know to make sure I don't screw up right away. I'll save my screw ups for when we pull a bunch of mobs. :rolly: I'm happy to have any feedback from anybody, though, so feel free to chime in if you have a thought that might help a n00bie.

See you in....hell, I don't know where. Whatever is sort of like Tir na Nog. Or Ironforge. Or especially like Lake Hurbury, if we can get Alia and Sticky to sign up!!!

I can answer.. but I'm not Morety... :(

You can definitely answer. I just like to crack on Morety, because he always has these long, funny replies when I finally get talked into joining a new game.

See, usually I'm like WAY behind everybody else. This time, I'm actually not joining as you guys are already reaching the end game, so maybe it won't be so bad. But, I definitely still feel a little n00bish, so feedback would be helpful.

So answer away. Morety may need a day or two for authoring his normal comedic treatise. :hump:

My attempt at answers:

1. nope, mainly make one that looks like you want. you can reset your feats at a trainer for 30c, not sure about skills though.

2. most classes are pretty soloable, assassin can be squishy but has very high dps, think the PoM has some squishy as well but gets better at later levels

3. can't answer this one

4. nothing special just be on Zug and send a tell to someone and you'll get in (assuming of course you pick the right person to ask. :0)

See ya there.

1. Is there anything stupid I can do during character creation that I may regret later?

Not really anything you can mess up... like was said above.. just make it how you wish to look in game.

2. Knowing I sometimes play at weird times, what chars are currently considered to be a good mix of solo ability with at least something to offer a group?

I can only speak from experience... Guardian's are tough tanks and I can group and solo pretty easily... but lots of people have made numerous class and "tried" them out... you can level to 20 pretty quickly in this game...

3. Any PBAE chars? I would love to be a hero at the "Fin Tree" again!
Not "really" PBAE... but the fighting system in this game is based on your attacks... so if you swing in a circle you'll hit everything around you... but your primary target will see the most damage... try things out... everything has some type of AOE damage.

4. I get that Zug is the Lion server of choice. Is there an equivalent of a realm or other choice I need to make to ensure I can be in our guild/clan?
Zug is where it's at... no realms here... your race will determine where you start off after you leave the starter island (lvl 20ish)... but getting to the other area's is quite easy... all characters start at the same starting area... lvl 1-5(or 6)... and then goto Tortage Island... there are many "instances" of this area so you'll be here with all classes and races until you are ready to leave the island...

ZOMG Jamma throws down the gaunlet!

I was looking at the recommended specs and we prolly need computer upgrades like Memory, Mobo and Vid card since we eased out of gaming last few years. Isnt that always the case.

Current spec: AMD 64 Athlon 3400+ 2GHz, 1 GB mem, and Nvidia 7600GS AGP w/512 MB

Upgrades have stopped me from buying the game :(

I need a whole new system... maybe soon.

But then again.... this gives me time to learn from Jammers mistakes ;)

you guys may be alright...i wouldnt go spending on upgrade unless you have tried the game with some visual options set on low...shader on 2.0 versus 3.0...etc..

Jammer

Necro has some AE think it is PBAE . Demo has AE but cast cost is spendy . We do get splash damage and it really helps out on muliti mobs .

Best performance boost I've gotten from the default video settings for my system was to turn off shadows. Averaging 35fps, with shadows on system drops to less than 10fps.

My system: E6420 (2.13ghz dual core), 4gb ram, ATI 2600XT (512mb), Vista 32-bit

Grundy, you need to climb on board. I only started looking into this after your tempting text message last week!

It sounds like your system isn't too far behind mine, so I hope I'm OK. I kind of assumed I was good in the PC department. I've got approx. 3 GHhz CPU with 2 GB RAM and a pretty kick-arse video card which also has it's own 2GB+ of video memory (I think). If that won't do it, I may be in the exchange line at Best Buy tomorrow, because Mrs. Jammer won't let me buy a PC with our 20th anniversary trip right around the corner. I could always toss some more RAM in, if need be. It's pretty cheap and usually gives the most bang for the buck.

you should be fine... you can tinker with the settings really easily.

Oh I am on board Jammer! After seeing the download was 25gb I surreptitously added a TB of disk to our systems last week in preparation but since our upgrades are always 2x we ususally try to skimp by with min cost. or harvest what ever we can from the old systems.

So I take it the game comes on DVD? lol I need to add those too.

lol I'm at work atm, will reply tonight Jamm! Good to see you sucked in. I bet Hammer's been playing in secret and is almost level 40 already.

Jammer

Yeah, Hammer probably found a Gorbaconan camp that he can solo pull with his pet something or other. :rolly:

Hammer Hacks.

PS. I can echo and confirm the DVD requirement. It was the first thing I noticed when the Best Buy girl brought the box out. (They were sold out on the shelf, but had a few back in the stockroom. Yay!)

PSS. So it really doesn't matter if I'm an Aquilonian or Cimmarion or whatever? If I get stuck because I picked the equivalent of being an Alb while y'all are all Hibs, I'll be pissed. :cheese:

Oh the good side.. you can pick up DVD players for about $20 each... adding the burning functionality increases that amount 2-3 times...

You are correct... races (on the Zug Server) do not matter in game or at the end game.... PvP is guild based...

To confuse you a bit... there are "some" flavor of servers that are trying out the Race based server... those servers I guess matter which race you select..

Now I'm concerned.

Of course, I have nothing to fear yet, as this stinking thing is still installing. I'm glad they had the "This might take a long time" warning. I would have rebooted a few times by now. :)

Not to rain on your parade... but you'll then be required to D/L about a Gig of patches... :hump:

Some questions that come to mind: I like the fact that you can now identify them as questions, as opposed to beliving them to be scientific and theological facts. I also like the fact that you can order them. While I doubt that you have actually numbered them in the order that they came to your "mind", you have separated them nicely so that they can be answered in an orderly fashion. I also like the fact that you counted to four without making any errors.

1. Is there anything stupid I can do during character creation that I may regret later? I'm sure that if you work hard enough, you will indeed find a way to do something stupid that you will regret later. Of course, the rest of us won't. I'm sure if you do find a way to do something stupid, we will all revel in the funneh that will come from it. It's pretty stupid-proof, you don't need to assign points or anything, and you can respec everything you've done very easily. I think the stupidest thing you can do at startup is to not make a female character, take her clothes off, and not look at her boobies in the startup screen. Of course, it'll mean you have to sit through that sinking ship movie again with no way to hit esc to get past it.

2. Knowing I sometimes play at weird times, what chars are currently considered to be a good mix of solo ability with at least something to offer a group? The early parts of the game are pretty solo-heavy for all characters in doing what are known as the "Night" quests. These are much like your "Epic Quests" from DAoC, but nowhere near as boring (ie it doesn't take a half hour to deliver the dog biscuit halfway across the realm, only to have to repeat it 12 more times because they want a dozen dog biscuits to be delivered one at a time). If you want a group toon, make a healer (priest). Other than that, daoc has told me either make a pure nuker or a pure tank, avoid hybrids. But, so far every character seems to do good with a group...other than maybe assassis/ranger which I'm not sure about.

3. Any PBAE chars? I would love to be a hero at the "Fin Tree" again! :rolly: Necromancer has a good pbae and pets. It doesn't work the same as a chanter though. I'm still getting used to it but he does seem to kick ass in pve. I'm not sure how he'll be in pvp yet, since they actually have the "line of sight" thing down pretty good in this game. I don't think I'll be nuking through doorways ;)

4. I get that Zug is the Lion server of choice. Is there an equivalent of a realm or other choice I need to make to ensure I can be in our guild/clan?
You'll have to pick a class that has the character you want to play. If it ends up being a necro, you have to be a stygian. The rest was said above. For your nekkid female boobie model, I recommend the class that can play a Priest of Mitra.

MickeyFinn
05-28-2008, 08:09 AM
Priests of Mitra can only be Aquilonian.

All classes solo very well. Downtime is quite minimal. As it is right now, Bear Shamans have fantastic chain-killing ability in solo mode after 20. High DPS classes (barb, assassin, all-offense conq) can make up for their downtime by killing mobs much more quickly, though.

Welcome aboard Jammer. I don't know if I remember you from Pellinor or not but I played for a while as a ranger with this name. I eventually was in Fianna in the LoL alliance. Will be fun to enjoy some AoC with you!
