OK so i spent around 5 hours running around last night for crafting, and didnt get very far.
Heres what i learned.

At level 40, head on over to one of the resource zones and pick up ALL of the gathering quests.
They are: Woodcutting, Stonecutting, Mining, Prospecting, Weaving, Tanning.
Now, in the resource zones are all the resources you need at least for the first 3 tiers (didnt see more than that).

There are resources all throuought the zones in the game, but having spent some time looking for them, there are not that many.

You have to gather "20" of an item, go turn it into the original quester who will then reward you with a little xp and money and give you another intermediate quest, which is to go back to the same resources and mine it til you get lucky and get a "special" resource.

Once you did the special resource, you have to wait til level 50 to be able to gather tier 2 stuff.

So yeah, gathering is level dependant and hopefully this will shaft the gold pharmers (LOTRO suffered really bad from this).

Craftinting itself is rough to say the least. You find the basic resource, metal/hide/uncut gem/stone/wood and have to buy a "kit" from the general merchant in town to make it. The kit is not that cheap when you think of how many you have to make.

Basically the tier 1 stuff i can make i wouldnt have wanted to wear when i was level 40. Typical MMO crafting approach.

Gemcutting seems broken. You pay money to learn how to cut gems, the merchant gives you the recipes, but of the 50 or so gems you can make, it dosnt give you stats for any of them until you make one (unlike weapons and armor where it does).

Weapons and armor have gem slots, tier 1 have 1 slot. Tier 1 gems are typically +5 to a stat. So a single +5 stat on a level 40 peice of armor.

I mapped out all the resources in one zone and will post a screenie as soon as i figure out how to take a screen shot in game :)

Oh yeah, theres one last craft. Architect.

Also, not sure how you level your craft as there are no "points" listed or level i can see in the craft window. You do have a bunch of quests (which you cannot delete and take up space in your journal) for armorsmith and weaponsmith, and you make stuff and turn it in to complete the quest. Im guessing when you do all the quests (12 at tier 1 on armorsmith) you can move on to tier 2. But thats a guess.

Awww... it's level based!??!
And I just got it and was going to "borrow" all the guilds money to grind out crafting. lol... There goes that idea!!

Gonna have to xp instead!

apparently they've added waypoints for resources as of today's patch...

Those waypoints are buggy at best, they come and go.
I logged in last night and nothing, then i crashed, logged back in and they were there...all for 20 minutes when they disappeared again.

Yeah I didn't see any myself, maybe the forums were confused.

I did get two of my rare resources though!
