SotG from Mark Jacobs

In 2005, when Mythic signed the licensing agreement for Warhammer, I promised Games Workshop that we would create a great and glorious game. When Electronic Arts acquired us a year later, I told them the same thing. Now, a year after that acquisition, nothing has changed: we still intend to deliver the next great MMORPG. As many of you may have heard, we have extended WAR’s development cycle until the 2nd quarter of 2008. The reason is simple; we will not release Warhammer Online until it is the game we set out to create two years ago.

Our goals for Warhammer Online are not easily met. The game includes many new and innovative ideas, a feature set that is going to blow players away, and, most importantly, the best RvR system in MMORPG gaming. These things take time to implement and test properly. During the last phase of beta testing, we received valuable feedback from our testers that will help make these features even better. When we looked at our options, two paths lay before us: 1) Ship the game on time with fewer features and less polish, or 2) Extend the development cycle and spend the needed time and money to make WAR great. We chose the latter path - to invest additional time and effort in implementation and polish to make WAR great. Fortunately, we have the resources and support of EA behind us to extend our development cycle; time that will be used to make sure the game is everything we want it to be. WAR is coming, and it will be glorious.

One of the “popular” topics of discussion regarding EA Mythic this past week has been the subject of layoffs within the studio. While we did let several people go from the Warhammer Online team, the number was *quite* small and their loss had no impact on our development schedule. These layoffs were part of our normal studio operations and a necessary step for EA Mythic to ensure that we have a focused and committed team working on WAR going forward.

On the Beta front, we will begin a new phase of testing in December, and we look forward to getting even more people involved in WAR by the end of the year. We are approaching a half a million registrants, and, to my knowledge, this could be the most ever signups for a Western MMORPG beta. I am very proud of this as it is a testament to the strength of the community, the popularity of the Warhammer license, and the outstanding work the team at EA Mythic is doing on the game. When we open the beta in Asia, we expect the numbers to continue to climb as we’d like to see one million players signed up to test the game. At that point, we will be well on our way to bringing about the second part of the double entendre of our motto as WAR really will be everywhere.

Over the next few months in Beta, our players will find all-new content to experience, careers to play and cities to siege. Our Capital City team continues to push the envelope by creating the next generation of living cities in MMORPGs and Altdorf is simply breathtaking. New Community systems will be in place and we look forward to getting many existing guilds into the beta to try them out.

In addition, we’ll be making changes to the RvR (open field RvR FTW!) and Server Rule Set Systems. These changes bring WAR a step closer to fulfilling the promise that “War is Everywhere” while ensuring a great play experience for those that do not choose to engage in RvR 24x7. This is another example of how EA Mythic talks to the community, listens to what they have to say, and takes action. We will continue this process over the next three quarters as we continue to develop, expand and improve WAR.

As I often quote from movies, one line particularly leaps to mind right now: “Creation is an act of sheer will,” said John Hammond in Jurassic Park. Unlike his creation in that film, however, what EA Mythic creates will be great and glorious, and nobody will get eaten by giant reptiles. That is, until we bring Lustria to life and then all bets are off.

As always, we thank you for your patronage, support and interest.

What a glorious way to tell everyone that they're behind schedule.

As a manager for IT projects... schedules end up being a "best guess" than anything else. Yeah, it's great, and you REALLY want them to be on time... but in the end... it's not like someone is waiting to move into your "project" because they just sold their house counting on your project to be done on time.

It's just a game.

I'd rather they take pride in what they do and do it right... or we see like we have SOOOO many other games.. 2 or 3 patches in the first month... hell.. even one before it actually hits stores... which is so sad.

Ones before it hits the stores is actually pretty common because they typically need for a game to go gold and start printing well before the beta phase is over, since they release tons of copies opening day and without having a CD publisher the size of a city, it takes weeks to finish the copies and then ship them all out to have them waiting on opening day.

All I know is I want to at least see it soon. If Noleader or Muadi or any other Metro Detroit Michiganer is playing Warhammer. I will come over and watch you play while singing praise to your glorious conquests.:chainsaw:  :flak: :xloc: :hammer: :ripper: :8ball: :insta: :goo: :mini: How ever you get it done. I will even right a blog here on how you dominated the competition.
Morety, sorry man, you are about 6 hours away so even if you let an American in your house, I wouldn't be able to make the trip until my daughter is at least 3 months old and can defend for herself, kidding. My wife would kill me if I tried, hehe.

Hopefully they take the time to bring the graphics from the level of the original starcraft to that of Bioshock

NP Gepp. I'm pretty sure I'll be running the game as soon as it comes out.
I, like the other 500,000 people, am still trying to get into the Beta. Maybe the Lions will get lucky with this one.
Mo, keep sending Mythic those special donations :)

Quite a few are already in the beta and guild invites start with the next phase. I think the lucky guilds have already be notified but more invites for them may be coming

Cavan, ya, the first round was closed off. But they have been talking about round two starting up. Round two will be testing guilds and stuff, so they will be inviting a few more ppl. Maybe we will get lucky :)

Hey if they are doing the guild thing, I guess I will need a new guild as I haven't heard anyone from Chaotic order and since I left Restless Souls when Zitro wanted me to co lead it, lol. Can I get an invite to Legion of Lions. I will proudly show my nuts "flag" with honor :hump: . You also know that I am far less opinionated in games also ;) .

About Chaotic Order, hope Oakwing is okay?

I just have concerns about the project.... Seems they might be having issues with the IP...

When a game like Gods and Heroes is "shelved" about 2 months before launch... with players in Beta saying the game was fun and were excited for its launch... it puts me in the mindset that anything is possible...

With EA buying Bioware... and Bioware having an MMO company here in Austin.... where is the MMO company for EA going to be... (Virginia or Texas)??? Mark Jacobs... or Rich Vogel and Gordon Walton.... who leads....

Many "GREAT" games have been shelved for reasons users have NO CLUE about... and companies "always" use the excuse "We want to make the game as great as it can be..."

Derailing in progress!!!

I am not that worried. I think EA sees the market and they want there big MMO. They have UO right now and while they have actually rejuvinized that a also want a mainstream MMO.

Even with these delays EA Mythic still has one of the shortest development times of any MMO out there (2 and a half years or so) and with the press and quality of product they have and are putting out I have to give them props. I think EA recognizes this too. The president of EA during his speech about the downsizing even singled Mythic out saying they need not worry.

Mythic did have its own firing a bit ago but they have also grown tremendously too. They have expanded 3 floors I believe in the past few months in there building and about 25 job apps have been taken down from jobs.ea.com (yeah, I was looking there for a job :p ). That 25 is just positions and could be mulitple jobs per position.

I *am* worried, mostly because, a while ago, there were some people jumping ship, and I was told not to worry. Then there was a delay, and I was told not to worry. Then I was in beta, and without mentioning details, things transpired, and I was told, still, not to worry. In the mean time, every chance they get, their PR mollusks remind us of how great they are, how wonderful RvR is (which is a gimmicky name for pvp, which itself is a gimmicky name for what normal, rational people consider multiplayer gaming), and make a big deal about how they're making everything awesome. The problem is that isn't my impression. My impression is that, on the one hand, they talk about not just being copycats of WoW, yet the information they've released about the changes in design have shown an increasing tendency to lift everything except for largely cosmetic differences.

What I hear is an increasingly shrill and mindless affirmation of how great the game is going to be, with no substance to back it up. The videos of play available show me the same mindless crap that makes DAOC such a mediocre implementation of a promising idea. A lot of standing around, mashing a nuke button, or a heal button. I stick by my belief that nobody actually likes the 1-unit RTS model that so many MMOs use--but the social and gambling aspects keep people hooked. That's lame, and the fact that WHO looks like more of the same makes it lame too.

Gep, I'm still here. I quit playing DAOC about April when the summer sports season heated up. In July I got into the WAR beta, so I had been playing that off & on until the "first round" closed. My Shaman is ]LoL[ in the beta. I think there are like 5-7 chars in this guild. Due to the NDA I can't say anything about the game.
