I've been watching the progression of this since I saw the info appear on a local GSD rescue site, earlier this week.

Basically, the person who rescued the dog's husband saw something that looked like a dead animal in a ditch but passed it without realizing. 3 days later, while passing it again, he saw its head move and realized that it was a puppy and not road kill. When he found it, the puppy was close to death in this ditch, both hind legs badly broken and with a bullet wound in its side.

What kind of monster would do that kind of thing to a dog :(

Here's a snippet they aired on him the other day: http://www.cbs47.tv/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoId=64704@video.cbs47.tv&navCatId=5

Give that dog a purple heart. I was going to write what I would like to do the person that did this but I really dont feel like typing that much violence right now...........

It's possible the dog got hit in the rear end by a car or something, and, to give the dog a merciful death, his owner shot him--but did it incompetently.

True. But if that is the case he should have made sure the pup was dead and then buried him.

that's true. Maybe the dog was shot by accident while someone was hunting--made it to the road, and then got hit. That would explain the wounds and the fact that nobody tried to bury it or take care of it.

Here's an update on the puppy taken from an e-mail I just received:

The vet just finished the surgery, and took new x-rays.

Fresno had multiply surgical experts on this case.
By the estimate of the surgeons, they feel that Fresno’s injuries are older than we thought.
He has massive caulis build up, that had to be dealt with.

They said his little body was working overtime trying to heal itself.
Today they did repair the femur (right side) and the Pelvis / hip on the right side.
The pelvis actually had FOUR fractures just on that side. :(
He has seven screws in the femur, and I did not get a lot of information on the hardware for the pelvis. They said Fresno will require LOTS of physical therapy.

They are going to repair the left side TOMORROW!!
That side seems much worse. The vets say he will definitely develop arthritis.
I did not get the full extent of the fractures on the left side of the pelvis.

Over all the vet, and I quote says “He has every opportunity for an EXCELLENT QUALITY OF LIFE”.

As I see it, in his past circumstances, it appears he had no chance of any, quality of life.
Now he has an excellent chance. That has to put a smile on your face!!

When I get the photo’s I will have my new GSD friend put them on here for me.
All your thoughts, prayers, and well wishing, was heard and answered.

One more day of this, and it is all about the healing.

I'm still really pissed at whoever did this but that part does make it a little better. I still say this dog deserves a purple heart.

I really hope for the best for this dog. I truly hope that he'll be adopted by someone who'll be patient and caring enough to give the extra love to a dog that's been through a lot, and still will, no doubt, have a long road ahead of him.

I would have probably put the dog to sleep, it's going to have a hellish existence in the later years of its life. Healthy dogs, once they get old, are often put to sleep due to the complications of age, and this dog already has complications now.

Any dog that I find with a bullet hole in him will be put to sleep, almost surely.

I had to put my last dog to sleep and I hope to never have to do that again. Besides, the point is that this dog has fought hard to keep itself alive. Clearly this animal has a strong will to live. I would hate to see anyone come along and put that dog to sleep.

On the other hand I would have no problem putting the previous owner of this puppy to sleep. With my fists.

Yeah - it's very sad - but there are lots of healthy young dogs that need homes; the money and effort are probably better spent other places.
