Was he invented by a group of first-century proto-Christians who merely expanded upon certain passages in 2 Isaiah and the Wisdom of Solomon describing a supernatural entity sent by God into the world as a man?

Was he the Christian version of Horus?

The Christ is the Good Shepherd!
So was Horus.
Christ is the Lamb of God!
So was Horus.
Christ is the Bread of Life!
So was Horus.
Christ is the Truth and the Life!
So was Horus.
Christ is the Fan-bearer!
So was Horus.
Christ is the Lord!
So was Horus.

Christ is the Way and the Door of Life! Horus was the path by which they travelled out of the Sepulchre. He is the God whose name is written with the hieroglyphic sign of the Road or Way.

Da Vinci leads us to believe he was a King of Jewish descent. if Jesus was the hereditary king of the Jews, a direct descendant of King David, the Romans definitely had a genuine threat on their hands.

The Roman Church has taught and only disseminated doctrine stating that Jesus was not an actual king and didn't want to establish a Jewish homeland, but rather was primarily concerned with the establishing a kingdom in heaven.

Pontius Pilot was not concerned about any heavenly kingdom, his only concern was keeping the Jews under control in Judea. When the placard was nailed to the cross inscribed with the words "King of the Jews", it may not have been a mocking jest but a declaration of fact.

It should also be noted that crucifixion was only used by the Romans as capital punishment for slaves and the worst criminals. And scourging (being struck with a whip attached with steel implements) was not traditionally used by Roman soldiers before crucifixion signifying genuine hatred for the condemned.

Why would the knowledge of the continuation of the Davidic bloodline so frighten the Roman Church?
The answer is simple and is as old as humanity itself - power.

(This is a lead-in to Mary Magdalen and her holy grail which contained the blood of Christ.)

My opinion:

There really was a man named Jesus. He may or may not have been the King of the Jews, but he was very powerful among his people and posed a threat to the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire later deified him, once again, to control the populace.

I agree. He was a man -- a prophet, at best. But no more the son of God than any other man.

Having said that -- we can learn more about Jesus' life, or the stories of the Bible, but whether or not Jesus was the son of God is one of those things that no amout of scholarly research can answer. Like the existence of God Himself, you either believe or you don't.

I think his teachings of love and peace were great, and to follow in his footsteps, using him as a role model is a wonderful way to model your life.

I would add to the above that Jesus died. Let him go and move on.
