We had a brief discussion about focus staves last night, so I thought I'd post what information I had found on them here for all us mage-ish types to look at.

The following bit shamelessly ripped from the Mentalist Newbie Guide (http://home.naxs.com/metaphore/Spec.html) at http://www.mypetmage.com.

The power cost for your spells is modified from the listed value in the delve information, along a smooth curve depending on how the focus level of the staff compares to the level of the spell, as follows:

80% cost at ( focus >= spell level ),
90% cost at ( focus = 3/4 spell level ),
100% cost at ( focus = 1/2 spell level ),
110% cost at ( focus = 1/4 spell level ),
120% cost with no focus at all in the appropriate skill.

Remember, this is a smooth curve, not a tiered stepwise system; every level of disparity between spell and staff makes a difference.

Oh yeah, while in the pit last night when I was the only caster in the group I got an enchanter staff drop with 36 focus levels in all 3 spell lines and a DD proc. I'll pass this along to Boomie the next time I come out, but in the meantime I'm using it since it's not an Enchanter only staff. Enchanters and Mentalists both have Mana and Light spec lines so I don't waste nearly as much mana when nuking now :)
