five suitable alternative names to replace the character name in violation.

He has been playing with this character for over 40 levels and is well known and liked throughout the realm. Many players have gone out of their way in-game to compliment him on his name.

I see nowhere above in the Mythic guidelines where his name is breaking your rules, and think it's unreasonable that you should change his name.

Please reconsider your letter of warning to him.

Honestly, and this may not sit well with the rest of you guys.. but ... I think they're perfectly within their right. Especially the spirit of the game.

It's not a power trip... it's their game -- they also want to make it fun for everyone. Including those that want the setting to remain true to their story.

Everyone can have fun if their names match the "setting"... but it will create problems if some people use goofy names. It breaks the "suspension of disbelief" for those that want to play a fantasy RPG.

I could go on and on about this, but being the minority opinion, not to mention I don't even play (any longer) -- I'll leave it at that.

I only agree with name changing when it is without question offensive, retardape is not offensive. I remember hearing a story after the gulf war of a man with the license plate "JIHAD" people started calling police and politicians over it and come to find out it was the persons last name, I'm not sure if I spelled it like it was on the license plate but the point is one persons take on a name may have no bearing on its actual meaning. so it follows that everyone has an idea of what they consider roleplaying, for those that turn in names that are not actually breaking any rules are enforcing their brand of reality to the rest of us. Its too bad because turning people in is a reality based action and the only reason mythic changed dapes name was only because someone ACTED offended.

No, the RP server is really for staying in character in game.. the name thing is just the tip of the iceberg.

On the RP servers, it's taboo to use game mechanic language -- its best to explain things in ambiguous terms that aren't common day short-hand explanations for things. As well, it's more common for people to actually type/communicate in complete sentences.

As I said, the name thing is just the tip of the iceberg..

Shannon and I almost (VERY close - we had level 5 characters on an RP server) changed servers due to all the silly/offensive names on Pellinor. So yes, it does ACTUALLY bother some people... me included.

Some would call me an RP elitist... maybe.. I call it devotion to the spirit in which the game was made.

Retard is a legitimate word meaning "to slow down." Retarded, or Retard, is sometimes used as an insult to insinuate that someone is mentally handicapped. I cannot see how Retardape is offensive. If the name was Retardssmelllikeapes, or something referring to mentally challenged people (such as ourselves ;) ) in a derogatory manner, I could maybe understand it. Retardape simply implies that he is a slow ape. Its not like his name was Downsyndromeasshole or something. Would they say Lobotomizedape was offensive?

Mythic has never said anything about names on non-rp servers having to be within the spirit of the game, and I have never heard of them changing a name on our server because of that. Names like "Deeznutz Onyochin" get changed (now that guy was asking for it). And tradenames like Pepsi.
