we have this long history of linking aliens with anal probes. Lets look into this shall we?
First off, aliens, in the classical outer space sense, are a superior race, having space travel and the requisite advanced technology for space travel, and (assumed) a peaceful, but in some manner, advanced society (as a constantly war-torn society would not likely leave it's planet to visit 'baser' life forms, or develop high technology).
On the other hand, these same aliens are always reputed for abducting people and rectally probing them.
Why?
These aliens are superior beings. They are peaceful, and come with good intentions. Fine. Yet they do, what is to us, a terrible thing. These aliens are also (sometimes) thought to communicate telepathically.
But i disagree.
If you were a benevolent alien being come with intentions of spreading information and achievement, would not your first attempt be to communicate with the lower life form? Perhaps these aliens communicate through their asses (so to speak) and are merely seaking to utilize a translator in a similar manner. If they were telepathic, they would sense our 'discomfort' perhaps the probings are merely an attempt to reach out and communicate.
It's food for thought.
